Andrei Stratulat

A new guard at the Barrens who arrived with Barys Petrovich.

Defining Features

Andrei is a standard Soviet conscript. From a small town in Moldova, he grew up comfortable with physical labor, which comes in handy on the Barrens wall. Like many of his comrades, he's normally a heavy smoker. He's scrappy and is unlikely to back down from confrontation of the physical or verbal kind, and an injury sustained in a recent fight has left him with a damaged voice box and a raspy voice.

The third keeps his arms crossed and says, “Comrade Stratulat” with a voice so raspy I have to wonder if he had a throat injury of some kind that damaged his voice box.

Personality

Stratulat snorts and says, “So what’re we gonna do on a radioactive border with no bases? Live in our suits all day? Shoot anyone who tries to walk through a nuclear wasteland?”

Kowalczyk leans forward, arms still crossed. “There’s obviously a secret base. Maybe we’re supposed to keep the Germans from planting more radiation.”

Stratulat rolls his eyes and says, “Christ.”

Stratulat was raised as an atheist by parents who were also atheist, but his grandparents on both sides were devoutly Eastern Orthodox, and this influence has affected the way he experiences the world. He's cynical and painfully straightforward, and holds people at a significant distance until he determines them to be worth his time and effort. When he arrives at the Barrens, he does so with Maksim Kesküla, a friend he was at the same base with prior to being sent to the Barrens.
He can be very vulgar and tends to be mean to most people. He doesn't mind breaking rules or even laws if it serves his interests. Though he's willing to fight others, he stops short of maiming or killing. According to him, he and Kesküla were sent to the Barrens as punishment for robbing their base commissary.
