Church of Our Smiling Lady
The Church of Our Smiling Lady is a church devoted to Tymora, the Goddess of good fortune and luck. As the largest chapel in Cornelia and the surrounding wilderness, it provides its citizens and travelers with most common and even some uncommon items and services for healing, prayer, and recuperation.
Many locals can count on Tymora's worshipers to heal them of even some of the most grievous of injuries thanks to the worshipers' willingness to take chances on risky procedures and rituals, which Tymora favors greatly. The chapel has also garnered reverence from the locals over hundreds of years for its protection, both physical and spiritual, against years of goblin and orc raides.
In recent years a group knights from the Order of Our Sacred Chalice has begun to quest frequently from the chapel, and consider Cornelia their adopted home. The worshipers and groundskeepers of the chapel have graciously hosted the knights due to the recent decline of both the city and the church, believing the knights to be the good fortune of Tymora, sent to protect her followers, and by extension, the city.
History
The Tymora Church of Cornelia, or known less officially as the Church of Our Smilling Lady, was founded in the castle town of Cornelia in the twenty-fifth year of King Ohmsland II. The nomad elves would place this as the official year 777 AS, 117 years since the founding of Cornelia as an independent city-state. As a large fortified settlement on the edge of civilization, Cornelia had drawn the attention of several adventurers over the years seeking fame and fortune in the surrounding wilderness and its ruins. Many of these adventurers were followers of Tymora, Goddess of good fortune and luck, and would eventually settle down in the youthful city-state. Directed by their Goddess, many of these adventurers would use their wealth accrued through a lifetime of dungeon delving to fund the construction of a church to Tymora, in a year of luck that abounded in the kingdom. Since its founding, the Church of Our Smiling Lady has provided the castle town of Cornelia with abundant aid and respite for its citizens and travelers alike, functioning as the largest center for healing and worship in the northern provinces of Eudrose.Architecture
The Church of Our Smiling Lady was constructed in the style of the Cornelia Noble, a stone and plaster design with crossing wooden joints for support. The main hall stretches around 100 ft. and is buttressed by two smaller, identical secondary halls which make up its east and west wings. The main hall is headed with a bell tower on its northern side, which can be accessed from both inside and outside the chapel. The slate and wooden slat roof was designed with a low slope to match the design of the surrounding common houses and shops, only distinguished from the other buildings by its yellow-gold roof and tower. Statues in the likeness of Tymora stand in greeting at the main doorway, one hand outstretched and the other holding a coin as though to tempt visitors inside. The main hall is decorated in gold lining, and Tymora's symbol, the face up coin, can be found adorning several walls, pillars, and even inlaid into the stone floors. An air of comfort and almost luxury settles amonst the tables and benches inside thanks to extravagent rugs and tapestries decorating the walls and floors.Recent Events
- The recent goblin raid and orc attacks have devestated the walls surrounding the town of Cornelia, particularly the section of wall to the north of the chapel. Now the chapel acts as an impromptu bastion holding that corner of the wall against further incursions.
- The beloved knights of the Order of the Sacred Chalice have not returned from their most recent expedition in several months, prompting many worshipers and even townsfolk to worry for the knights' safety, though the devout of Tymora seem to have little doubt of the knights' return.
