Terminal City

The dystopian city of Terminal started as an attempt at a planned utopia, but the very planning for perfection was what caused the whole system to go bad.   An island was selected for being out of the way and for having only a few neighbors, who were all beyond the horizon and were intent on their own privacy. On the island a city was built with the latest technology.   Even the system of government for the island was preselected to be an unrestricted democracy of the majority vote of citizens, informed by advanced computer models using simulations to predict future needs.   With a limited population and tremendous medical science, the population of colonists voted on the makeup of the second generation, who in turn soon became able to vote on the makeup of more progeny to fulfill all the needs of the small society, with just enough redundant people and skills to accommodate those moments in which a person did not chose to fulfill the role for which they had been conceived, born, and trained.   While the society largely knew what sorts of people and occupations would be needed in the future years, an overwhelming majority voted each woman to have tremendous latitude of control over the genetics, nutrition, and training of her her own particular descendents. By way of mutually beneficial compromise, the will of the individual and the needs of the many were balanced by a system of rewards for those women who produced new citizens with skills needed by the island's population to keep them well supplied and advancing technologically.   As time progressed, the society chose to have mostly female citizens with just enough males to provide sufficient genetic diversity. And due to a phenomenon called "unconscious bias", men, being in the minority, gradually slipped into a second-class citizen status. Decisions were made and laws written from a largely (and eventually entirely) female perspective, with the common opinion that men somehow thought differently than women, and that that difference was inferior.   Eventually, the city was officially home of women exclusively, plus those men who were performing various chores but left the city to roam the remainder of the island until again called to the city for their service.
