Dead Behemoth

Written by orphidor

No creature from the Age of Balance has ever seen a living behemoth in person. In the current age, all that remains of them are their enormous bones scattered across various landscapes throughout the Realms, seemingly without any pattern of distribution. Very little is known about these monsters. Essentially everything about their existence, including why they died, is unknown.   What happened to them?
These creatures used to be the embodiment of the chaos running through the Realms of Athanya before they aligned. As the planes drew closer toward their current positioning, just as the flow of energy became suitable for the intelligent races, the shifts began to poison the behemoths and, one by one, they died.

Basic Information

Anatomy

No two of these monsters looked the same. While most walked on four legs, some had more and a few had only two. The shapes and sizes of their bones vary widely, from slender to robust, but all were much larger than any living creatures known to exist in the current era.   Many behemoths possessed a strange mixture of traits that seemed avian, mammalian, and reptilian, each of which had the potential to exist on the same individual, seemingly without reason. Their bodies were not always symmetrical, meaning that the skeletal structure of one limb may not always match that of its opposite.

Ecology and Habitats

Their remains can be found scattered through most biomes.

Dietary Needs and Habits

It's assumed that they would have needed to eat a lot due to their size, but exactly what they consumed is unknown. Some had sharp teeth, indicating that they ate meat, while others had flat, plant-chewing teeth or a mixture of the two. It's possible that the meat-eating ones ate the herbivores.   What did they eat?
The behemoths' teeth weren't always put to use. While they did feed on other creatures and each other, their primary form of sustenance was the imbalanced energy that coursed through the Realms at the time. They often congregated at leylines in order to bask in the energy, though this resulted in regular conflicts.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Their bones and teeth can be carved into pieces of art or used as building materials. A common practice is the use of the longer bones as wall supports.
EXTINCT
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
As no complete corpses have ever been found to this day, only skeletons, nobody knows for sure.
