Bring Out Your Dead

General Summary

After spending the night resting in Redfall's Roadhouse, the party set out to attend to business in town. Grom headed back to Iarstina's Anvil to get a custom set of studded leather armor made while Ra'zon headed back down to the Sunken Dragon in search of Big Tom and Skinny Pete. At the tavern, they were informed by the bartender that the pair were not around, but could probably be found in the Katalian Company's headquarters. The pair headed to the Blade Hall along the Martial Walk where they met the company steward Kinrith Whitestone, a flamboyant elf who began negotiating an extended contract for Big Tom and Skinny Pete. The party balked at the price and asked if they could simply ask the two out for drinks and Kinrith agreed, leading them to the courtyard where the pair of mercenaries were training. Skinny Pete accepted the party's offer to get drinks, and the four headed back to the Sunken Dragon.   At the Sunken Dragon, the group bonded over drinks. After awhile they noticed an argument between a large orc and a human woman. After the orc left Grom approached the human woman who introduced herself as Carmilla Valenti, a historian and treasure hunter. She had been searching for the wreck of the Sword of the North, a rumored treasure ship that ran aground somewhere in the Argendives after fleeing the destruction of Déon around a hundred years ago. Skinny Pete was incredibly distrustful of her, saying that she had contracted the Katalian Company three times prior in her search with no results, and the last voyage wound up with their friend Smelly Daniel being skilled by a ballista bolt through the eye. After some negotiation the party agreed to work as her protection on this voyage.   The party set out later that morning and had an uneventful first day's voyage. That night, Grom attempted to seduce Carmilla and was harshly shut down. The next several days passed with Ra'zon learning a few things about sailing from the crew, and on the fourth night the pair had drinks with Carmilla and the crew as everyone got to know each other. Carmilla explained more about the ship they were searching for. According to her, the Sword of the North was a ship carrying Kallindor of Gellos, the Déonian Master of the Treasury who fled the Ajokai Invasion 102 years ago. His ship never made it to Adarna and is believed to have run aground in the Argendives. Carmilla had found census records from the town of Burren five years after the supposed wreck, showing three northern elves living in the town when previously none had lived there. She believes this is evidence that the ship crashed near Burren and the survivors integrated into the town.   After spending over a week searching for the island, one night the party was awoken by crashing waves and thunder as the ship became caught in a terrible storm. The party was able to help prevent the ship from crashing, and as the ship came out of the storm a small island was spotted ahead. Pulling near it they found the ruins of a crashed ship which Carmilla said was the Sword of the North. The party was sent into a nearby cave to explore the wreckage. Inside, they found a host of dead bodies which began to rise from the dead and attack the party. Fighting their way through, they uncovered some sort of necromancer protecting a floating purple crystal. After a tense fight the party defeated the mage and turned their attention to the mysterious crystal. As Grom reached out to touch it, he suddenly found himself looking at a dark office filled with arcane books, cauldrons, and alchemical apparati. A cloaked shadowy figure entered the room and turned towards Grom, revealing a gaunt and nearly skeletal face. He spoke, telling Grom that he could see him, and the vision disappeared.
