For all of known history, the oceans have been impassable. To the west, a permanent maelstrom and violent storms make passage impossible. To the east, the nature of the curse is unknown, but there are tales of madness and sea monsters, and no ship has ever returned. But in recent centuries the western storms have slowly begun to subside, and just over a century ago the first ship successfully traversed the ocean and discovered the continent of
Olmir on the other side.
After the discovery, more explorers set out to seek their fortune, and not long after, the mining town
Athun and port city
Pontil were founded to take advantage of the continent's plentiful jewels and precious stones. However, attempts to expand beyond a small radius around the two settlements have proven unsuccessful. Orcs and goblins roam the
wood to the south, monsters stalk the northern
marsh, and west of the
mountains lies a vast desert.
Adventurers have come in waves, with each generation realizing first that this unexplored land is anyone's for the taking, and subsequently that adventuring is dangerous and deadly and not always quite as lucrative as one might imagine. But the world is overdue for another boom, and perhaps this time it will stick. (Aspiring adventurers should head to the
Sly Toad Tavern and take a look at the
bounty board).
