Graulen Wood

Show spoiler
You stand at the edge of a wheat field, the trees before you rustling in a chill autumn breeze and a warm mid-morning sun at your back. The dirt road at your feet is dappled with light, but the way ahead is quickly devoured by shadows. As you walk, thorns and vines snake into your path and snag at your clothes, until thick undergrowth overtakes the road entirely. Suddenly you hear a rustling deep in the wood, louder than before. Best hope it's still only the wind...
The Graulen Wood is one of the areas that directly borders Pontil's farmland. While it is still dangerous, it's considered one of the safer of the wild areas, and non-adventuring folk have even been known to venture into it on occasion, usually for hunting, and most of the time they return without too much injury. Walking here may be slow going (and you can't really bring a mount), but foraging is nearly trivial, so at least you can travel light. Not too light, though; you never know when you'll get unlucky.

Geography

The forest borders the Ellades Mountains but doesn't quite stretch all the way to the shore. The southeast opens up into the Lauferren Plains, and the area a short ways north of Athun River turns to Dresguln Swamp. Past explorers' accounts suggest that another river cuts through the wood to the south, and one claims to have found the southern edge of the forest where his party was brutally assaulted by ghosts, though that man was delirious by the time he returned so his descriptions should be taken with a grain of salt. The terrain is rough.

Fauna & Flora

Aside from typical animals (rabbits, deer, the occasional bear, etc.) the wood is also home to large bands of orcs and goblins, and there have been accounts of a variety of other monsters as well. Doctors and alchemists are still studying all the various plants not found in Atalia, but a fair number of them seem to be edible, and a variety of Goodberry grows there naturally.
