January 2025: New Year, Same Old World
WorldEmber 2024 was, narrowly, a success once again! You can look at the full list of my WE articles in my previous log, but suffice to say that I managed to squeak past the 10000-word mark within the last 12 hours —as per usual, frankly. WorldEmber always comes down to a mad scramble for word count in the end. One of these years I'll conquer my executive dysfunction and take care of that before the deadline looms... but for now, I just have to cope with it. Anyhow, aside from the fresh articles from WE there has been some other behind-the-scenes progress. I've made some decisions about the world lore with significant implications. Not wholly sure when they will be reflected on the site, but I'll get there.
In other news, this month is the time for submissions to the Worldbuilding Awards again! Last year was a strong year for me with four nominations and one very prestigious win; that said, I'm really not sure I can top or even match that this year. Since all of those nominated articles are now disqualified from submission, I'm sort of struggling to figure out what other articles I have that are as good as those four. At this point, I think my course of action will be to focus tightly on finishing that damn map overhaul, since I really want to submit it to the Cartography (and/or Artist's Cartography) category. Of course, the aforementioned lore changes will greatly impact the map, so we'll see if I can patch it up quick enough to submit!
Aside from all that, there may be another slow-down in output in the coming months. I'm still searching for a day job (and running low on funds while I do so), plus winter is always a period of less mental energy for me. It will pass. I may also look into reconfiguring my currently-defunct Patreon, if there's enough interest - goodness knows I need the money. Anyways. Happy new year, all!
