Yx

Played all over the Republic of Thorns, and having spread to its neighbouring countries, Yx is a game of strategy enjoyed by royals and commoner alike.

History

Created by the strategist Lin Vasma, when she was working as an instructor for the army of Felt, in the year 371 of the Age of Calm. It was created to be a training tool for officers to learn how to outwit their enemies on the field of battle. The officers enjoyed the game so much that they brought the boards and pieces with them wherever they could. But since it was quite cumbersome they asked Lin Vasma if she could develop a smaller version for them. The strategist saw great benefit in this and created what is today known as Commoner Yx. The trial of creating a simple version of the game also sparked an idea with Lin, who decided to go in the opposite direction. After 3 years of work, she revealed Grand Yx, which would quickly grow to become a popular spectator sport among the nobles of the city. All the while, Commoner Yx spread throughout the country and was played in most taverns within 10 years.

Execution

The two players take turns moving one piece each to try and attack their opponent's pieces. Each piece has its own pattern it is allowed to move and attack, which also changes depending on what space it occupies on the board.

Components and tools

Yx is played on a hexagonal board, divided into smaller hexagonal pieces. Each player has a set of game pieces colored either light or dark. The size, amount, and properties of these components vary depending on which version of the game is played.
Commoner Yx
Each side has 4 pieces. All of the components are usually made out of wood. The pieces are often flat disks with a symbol carved into their back.
Standard Yx
Each side has 12 pieces, usually made out of stone, which have been sculpted by hand. The board is made out of stone, often marble.
Grand Yx
Each side has 36 pieces. This game is played on a large board which takes up and entire room, usually built so that it can also house spectators. The pieces are much larger and a huge amount of money is put into their construction. Many nobles use their game room as a way to show of style and wealth.

Participants

Commoner Yx
Played by almost everyone. A gameboard can be found in most homes. In places without proper pieces, it is not uncommon for the board to be drawn on the ground and pieces to be improvised objects.
Standard Yx
Because of its heftier construction, it is more common to find these larger boards in taverns or the homes of the middle class. Since the complexity of the game increases greatly, those who can play this game are usually seen as quite smart. Still commonly used as a training tool for military officers.
Grand Yx
Played only by dedicated players who spend years mastering the game. These players are known throughout the continent and usually attract huge crowds whenever they play.
