While incredibly alarming, there is a rather romantic explanation for it. It's a protection for the individual in question because who would want to eat the person that they are truly destined to be with?

An eternal bond with a romantic partner, strengthening the effects of the Lifemate ceremony.

Side/Secondary Effects

Partners are unable to magically influenced by each other. Their blood will also be unappetizing to each other.

Discovery

If not discovered during a Lifemate ceremony, it is discovered usually on accident. Consumption of blood is part of Siren anatomy so it's discovered by the Siren first.
