Half-Elves
"Let me put it to you this way. You think about elves and you get the whole picture--one hundred years old and still not greyhaired; sharp of wit, the picture of Navarresean fucking dignity. Think about a human and it's Laxa's own wit, the creativity and the drive. What did we--did I get? Somewhere in the middle? Don't make me sick. Piss all and not a pot to put it in, that's the truth of it."
-Hens Drift, bastard son of Heldenheim's Low Street
Half-elves often find themselves trapped by expectations. People know what an elf is, what their influence has been on the development of Halinor. Humans are newer to the scene, less a mark on the history but certainly a force to be reckoned with in the present. The mixture of these peoples, half-elves, leaves a lot of questions to be answered, but they are simple. Each half-elf is the product of their families, of course, but also of their own drive. That so many feel out of place--especially in more traditional cultures--is not their own fault, but they take it upon themselves to venture forth and find where they really belong.
Character Traits
Half-elf characters start off with the following modifiers to their stats and abilities
Ability Score Increase
Your Charisma score increases by 2, and two other ability scores of your choice increase by 1.
Age
Half-elves mature at the same rate humans do and reach adulthood around the age of 20. They live much longer than humans, however, and often exceed a century.
Size
Half-elves are about the same size as humans, ranging from five to six feet tall. Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common, Elvish, and one extra language of your choice.
Darkvision
Thanks to your elf blood you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Fey Ancestry
You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.
Skill Versatility
You gain proficiency in two skills of your choice.
Half-elves in Halinor
Half-elves, being the product of a human and elven union, are easily found anywhere those populations are wont to mix. This typically means anywhere east of Tarwa'kem, but even there and further west of Dagger Canyon these half-elves can be found. Like humans they might wonder about their place in a world so strongly defined by elves, but they are typically adaptable and eager to get along with others.
Aqualonde
Humans and elves have lived in Aqualonde together for a great many years, and unlike their chillier cousins to the north, there is no inherent shame to humans and elves co-habiting, marrying, or having children. There are some traditional sort of elves that do not look favorably thereupon, and these reasons vary--some might be bloodline purists, others simply more worried about the difference in life spans and the pains that might cause. Regardless half-elves have the advantage of easy access to both species' cultures, but their ability to influence those cultures can be lacking. Aqualonde welcomes anyone to play in the field of politics, but the interplay therin is daunting. Easier, perhaps, to wander and make one's own place in the world.
Avosa Tesota
Avosa Tesota is the city of misfits, of half-breeds and daring--of course half-elves are present and thriving here! Whether by land or sea half-elves make up a strong proportion of the city's population, and the mix of elven cultural heritage with other people's is a well-earned respite for a people wondering about their place in the world.
Carinthia
Humans have lived in the elven home of Carinthia for quite a long time, of course. It's only natural in that time half-elves spring up, and to Carinthia's credit, it's not that bad of a social misstep, especially at the lower rungs of society. Far more important that the bastard is a pious sort, after all. Rarely are half-elves in positions of means or power in Carinthia as the laws as written preclude them from inheritance. Noble parents might not acknowledge these children officially, but this does not mean they are shamed and hidden (all the time)! Half-elves have been the captains of small contingents of guards, after all, and distinguished themselves in military service. Let us not forget that the Lord Commander is a half-elf!
D'yadya
Elves were not historically a part of D'yadya; the lands felt the influence of the Navarresean See, of course, but the deified wizards of that empire preferred the more verdant heartlands of Halinor. Since then the proliferation of elven populations spread mainly from the north, Carinthia, and southward along the eastern coast. Any elves in the west, pass Dagger Canyon, are unique cases--drawn perhaps by the pastoral, nomadic life or the monastic traditions, perhaps. Like everyone else, however, they must adjust to the presence of the Vocirans there. Half-elves do not have it any easier when it comes to their dual heritage. What pieces of elven life might be lost due to their parent's absence, and how odd they must seem in a land not used to elves.
Shurevaire
As the elflands' most integrated society, half-elves might consider Shurevaire's shores to be their homeland if not Avosa Tesota. It's a fresh enough place that the heavy weight of Navarresean culture has no recognizable imprint--whether one feels like this is freedom or a lack of guidance is up to the individual. Regardless half-elves are not likely to be looked at as oddities here, and frequently that is enough.
Tarwa'kem
Like the open lands further west, Tarwa'kem is not a land tailored to elven life. The long generations of dwarven influence prove even less hospitable than the salt flats and savannahs of the west. That being said the master of Tarwa'kem is in the coinage and even half-breed coin spends as well as any other. Some half-elves find this sort of apathy about their heritage appealing, and they're willing to abandon their past to forge their own future.
