The other dimension
Atlas first discovered the portal inside of an ancient temple; the crown led him to it. The temple was highly defended; dozens of ancient guards reanimated and had to be fought before he used his crown to activate it. Beyond the portal, a vast expanse of darkness stood before him, dimly lit red by a substance in the air. He encountered creatures of unimaginable size that fed on the substance in the air. They all took notice of him, but one took particular interest in Atlas and followed him back through the portal when he left, realizing the air was burning him.
On return trips, he used a protective shield to breathe, and collected the substance in the air and compacted it, creating Red Plasma.
He conducted many experiments on the Red Plasma and the portal itself, eventually figuring out how to create his own portals to the dimension. The generators in the fortress have gateways inside of them that siphon the Red Plasma from the dimension to convert it to energy or store it. The creature that followed him shrunk in size from the absence of Red Plasma, but it is more manageable as a pet while it's smaller, so he makes sure to regulate its diet, preventing it from growing out of control. The Queen wanted him to get rid of it originally, but she's grown to love it more than him. She even gave it a name, calling the creature Marv. It's especially adorable when Marv does things that a normal pet would, like sleep on your lap, and not eat your furniture whole.
