Job's Barn

The Barn is the central building of the Homestead, a peaceful community of survivors established and governed by the man named Job. The Barn is the community center, the place where the community's makeshift government assembles, where marriage and religious ceremonies take place, where the community would gather in the event of a combative scenario for defense, and where the town gathers for the nightly hoedown celebration. It is a place where the woes and grief of the new world fade away, where happiness and fun can be found once again, and a rare slice of joy in the harsh, tragic, and unforgiving reality that is Ashrain.

Purpose / Function

The Barn was the central landmark of a ruined Western town that became the survivor enclave known as the Homestead. Within this settlement, the man named Job established a home for his growing family. As that group grew and grew to include dozens and then hundreds of people, the community expanded into the entire town and began to thrive by cooperation and goodwill. The Barn remained the central focus of the community, with all major community events taking place therein: marriages, religious ceremonies, gatherings, meetings, councils, and, of course, the nightly community hoedown to celebrate life. As such, the Barn is seen by members of the Homestead as a rare place of joy, laughter, music, and merriment in the unforgiving world of Ashrain, a place where the goodness of humanity is preserved and where the possibility of a future remains. It is also the fortified shelter for the entire community, making it even more important to the survivors of the Homestead as it is the one place in which they have vested all their hopes of survival in the event of an attack by a hostile outside force.

Alterations

The Barn was almost entirely destroyed during the Great Cataclysm. Only splinters of its walls and the roof remained intact. When it was discovered by the man called Job, he rebuilt it from the ground up, utilizing resources gathered from throughout the town and later from across the land as the population of the Homestead grew. When faced with external threats from groups such as the Carvers, the community fortified the walls of the Barn with shielding and stocked it with weapons to serve as a shelter and a bunker for the community in the event of an attack.

Architecture

The Barn is a massive structure of wood beam and sheet metal construction. The walls were originally simple wood beam, but were destroyed after the Great Cataclysm and had to be rebuilt. After rebuilding, fortifications were added including steel panels across all the walls and cinderblock defenses at the base. At over thirty feet in height, it has two stories inside the walls: the main floor, and the loft. The main floor contains items such as chairs and tables, but is mainly left clear for large gatherings. The floor has a solid concrete foundation, while the loft is of wood beam like the walls.

Defenses

The Barn is heavily fortified against attack, with steel plate and concrete shielding on every wall and extendable defenses including pikes, spears, pitchforks, and sharpened stakes. The only doors, the main doors, are reinforced with a comprehensive locking mechanism designed to make them virtually impenetrable as they are the only real point of entry. Windows in the second story loft open to allow the occupants to throw or fire weapons down on attackers. The Barn is designed to contain the entire population of the Homestead and all its vital resources in the event of an overwhelming attack, and to be able to withstand seige for an extended period of time.
