The Kingdom of Draldon

Written by Dronin Gammerson
People:   The Kadock are a very tall race that average 7 feet tall. They value speed and intelligence above strength.   Climate:   Above ground the climate is cool and windy in the summers with cold snowy winters.   Terrain:   On the surface, the terrain is mostly fields with a few small mountains in the northeast. A large river flows along the eastern and southern borders of the kingdom.   Underground the caves and caverns form a vast network of tunnels and rooms. Lumistone is in some places very prominent providing a beautiful soft light to the subterranean world.   Culture:   The surface of Draldon is almost completely wild. There are a few small villages and houses here and there but those are not very common. Most people that live above ground are farmers of some type. The farmers are not part of the feudal system. Farmers have a complicated ranking; they are both well thought of and looked down upon by the wealthy. Draldon’s upper class is forced to recognize the farmers as they are often very wealthy themselves, but look down upon them because of their lifestyle. Living on the surface has over time come to be a known as a lifestyle for the uneducated and uncultured or those that want to live outside of laws of the kingdom.   Army:   The soldiers of Draldon use a shield wall strategy which is highly effective in close quarters such as a tunnel. Most Kadock prefer the use of a spear and a small shield but many use two swords or a sword and a shield. The Kadock also have a small elite force of archers and augment their attacks with ballista as they can be a devastating weapon used to defend the tunnels surrounding their city. In addition, the city defenses include a mounted array of longbows that can all be fired simultaneously in a sweeping arc.   Points of Interest:   On the ceiling of the underground city there is a massive vein of Lumistone running through the cavern rock. This stone lights the city with a constant soft, blue glow. This of course makes sleep hours inconsistent for the inhabitants of the underground city. In the very center of the city there is a forty foot tall statue of king Draldon made of pure Iron. The statue was made 20 years after the rule of king Draldon when the people of Draldon wished to honor him as king and their greatest ruler. The Thengal Forest is an fantastic underground forest located in a large cavern just north of the city. The small trees of this forest are known for their remarkable ability to absorb the rock that they grow in and include it in their structure. These trees only grow to be between 7 and 10 feet tall and are shaped a lot like a bonsai trees. Their bark and core are a dynamic blend between rock and organic material. The wealthy citizens of Draldon plant these trees in gold and other precious metals and use them to decorate with.

History

The kingdom of Draldon was not always this Prosperous and welcoming. Once, a long time ago the underground tunnels and caverns of the land were inhabited by the Ravagers (intelligent, deadly two-legged subterranean beasts). The people lived above ground always vigilant against the Ravager’s night raids as they killed and plundered their livestock, sometimes killing the villagers that got in their way. The land was not always known by the name Draldon. In the year 1000 King Draldon led the people and made many great strides in improving the land, its laws and its armies. When the great Pale wars began King Draldon and his armies fought mightily to defend their land against Pale’s armies. The kingdom suffered many casualties in these battles. After the war had ended and much of the land had been burned, torn and shaken, king Draldon decided to move underground. This would serve two purposes. He intended to wipe out the long standing threat of the Ravagers and take advantage of the defenses that can be gained from building a city underground. King Draldon soon killed all of the Ravagers and claimed the underground territories as his own naming it Draldon. He found a very large underground cavern with a large vein of lumistone in the ceiling that made an excellent place for their underground city to begin anew and they started the long process of rebuilding their kingdom.
