Daima Grae

Written by Eowisteria

Physical Description

Special abilities

Daima can leech poison and illness from someone’s body (or blight from plants) and hold it within her body for a short time. If she does not release it, it will hurt her. She can redirect the pestilence into the body of an enemy if need be. This allows her to cleanse the afflicted person, and also give the offender “a taste of his own medicine.”

Apparel & Accessories

Breeches with tall boots and wrap-buttoned blouse as shown, sometimes wears dress as shown with wrist-length gloves (depending on the occasion). Wears small bag containing petrichor salts around her neck tucked into shirt.

Starting inventory (things kept on her at all times): petrichor salts, prayer journal, and ivory ballpoint pen, bag of coins.
  • Petrichor salts: smelling salts that have been infused with crushed juniper, dew, and glacial seaglass to achieve the “after the rain” scent. This smell is calming and cleansing to anyone nearby, which can ease the stench of sickness to whoever Daima is healing. Some people misunderstand this to believe that Daima herself has a calming presence, not realizing it comes from the smelling salts she always wears.

  • Prayer journal. Daima finds it easier to write out her prayers since inwardly she buries everything pretty deep. This is her favorite way of staying connected to Elyon. This prayer journal was given to her from a passing stranger with a long grey beard when she was very small in Draldon Above. He said he saw the sadness and pain in her eyes the instant he spotted her playing by the river and told her that Elyon could help, and the prayer journal could be a good outlet.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Daima is from Draldon Above. Her father is a wealthy farmer, but a coward. Her mother is a cavalry captain, and is brave and kind. Her mother has long absences for cavalry-related reasons, so Daima worries for her safety. Daima’s father pretended to be bedridden for ten years to avoid being drafted into the armed forces. A bearded stranger helped young Daima discover her leech-healing ability and gave her a prayer journal. Daima wanted to heal her father, but felt betrayed when she found out he is not ill.   Daima ran away and spent two years as a nomad in Draldon Above. She witnessed crime and injustice, which sickened her. She wanted to bring small amounts of purity to an impure world. She was discovered by an old woman at the Academy of Cascading Pursuits, located in Draldon Below, and was taken on as a pupil. Daima felt like this Academy was her haven. During her years of study, she reconciled with her father. She tried to reach her mother but did not receive a reply to her letter.   Right before her Ceremony of Fluid Transition to adulthood, Daima was in the middle of leeching snake venom from a patient, when a raven crashed through the glass into the room. Daima reacted with panic, batting the raven away before it could hurt her and the boy. When she did, she accidentally transferred the snake venom into the bird, killing it.   She had violated the “no killing” motto of the Academy. She was not allowed to come back after her Ceremony. Daima could no longer bear to be in Draldon, because everyone now detested her for what she had done, and for how she had done it. Daima decided to head into the world to re-make herself.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Daima wants to do her small part to alleviate perversion and anguish in the world, hoping to make it a purer place little by little, so she uses her gift.

Virtues & Personality perks

  • Resourceful for using anything nearby to fight or defend, especially since she does not start out with weapons, and only has starting armor under her clothing. Will use a stick, a rock, someone else’s small dagger, a nearby rope, etc.

  • Bookworm. Loves reading, and has a knack for remembering things she read in books. Loves astronomy and Elyon-praising poetry most of all. Reading is an escape. Likes to create stories in her head about difficult situations she is in.

Vices & Personality flaws

  • Tends to internalize emotional pain. She sees a lot of corruption and hurt in the world and it makes her feel spiritually sick, but rather than burden anyone else with her emotions, she pushes them down deep inside. Daima almost never cries. One way to tell if she is internalizing is she will unconsciously cross-hug her arms over her abdomen. She hides her sensitivity by trying to intellectually one-up the offender, since intellectual matters are the only time she feels she has power over a situation. This can make her come off as an imperious know-it-all.

Social

Religious Views

Relationship with Elyon: Loving. Keeps great communication with Elyon, remains faithful, leans on Him. Grieves over all the evil in the world because it spits in the face of Elyon.

Wealth & Financial state

Fairly wealthy background, so she sets out with a slightly larger than normal amount of coin. Known well-enough in Draldon Above and Draldon Below due to being the daughter of a wealthy farmer and a cavalry captain, and due to her attendance to an elite academy. Respected and tolerated well-enough, but begrudgingly so. The people of Draldon treat her with respect only out of obligation toward her status. To Daima, this feels strained and fabricated, as if one wrong move will villainize her in their eyes.
