In addition, they claimed the Zaibatsu were too powerful, and controlled the Imperial court.

Northern Clan Rebelion

When the Northern Samurai Clans revolted against the garrisoning of forts by the Imperial Army over that of clan garrisons. The Emperor authorized Saiga Takamori along with the Tamura, Inagaki, and the Sakurai clans to subjugate the rebellion. The Imperial Army and Clans split off to deal with several different rebellions in the north which weren't link geographically, as General Saiga wanted to crush the rebellion before they could form a larger force together. After several months of fighting, the Imperial Army laid siege to the largest remaining rebel force at the Imperial built Sakamoto Castle while the clans mopped up smaller pockets.

Siege of Sakamoto Castle

Caught by surprise Saiga Takamori is quickly forced into a double siege, with him besieging the castle and the traitor clans besieging him. Due to the discipline of the Imperial Army, and Saiga Takamori's steadfast attitude and attention to detail, the army manages to wage successful trench warfare and take the main fortress, finally turning it against the traitors. However, the Imperial Army is unable to break the siege due to the sheer difference in numbers.

Fall/Liberation of the Imperial Capital of Miyako

While the siege around Sakamoto Castle is happening, the Imperial Court is in chaos as the Emperor desperately tries to find a relief force. However, a force belonging to the Sakurai Clan, marches on to a defenseless capital, overthrowing the Ashina Shogunate, and forcing the Emperor's hand. The Emperor is forced to recognize the Sakurai Clan as the new Shoguns, and orders the disbandment and surrender of the Imperial Army.

Surrender and Seppuku of Saiga Takemori

Abandoned by his liege, General Saiga Takamori as a loyal officer of the Emperor chooses to surrender in exchange for the safe passage and retirement of his men. The newly appointed Sakurai Shogun accepts, but due to political shenanigans, Saiga Takamori is forced to commit Seppuku to take responsibility for the 'his corruption involving the Zaibatsu and suppression of clans using the Imperial Army'. Later on, however, his name is cleared of the made-up charges, and he is fondly remembered as an ideal Samurai, loyal and Disciplined.
