Lashtria, the Land of Death

Everyone knows what happens after a person dies. They go to the Land of Death, Lashtria.

Georgraphy

The Land of Death lies on the western edge of the Shattered Lands, and therefore is basically a desert of ash. The main part of the Lashtria is positioned between the Ocean of Despair and the Sea of Sorrow. But the strait is too wide and the Land of Death doesn't have territories on the other side to control it. To the south of Lashtria the desert expands up to the very edges of Asteya. In this desert live so called the free dead, or Oblivious. They, unlike the residents of mainland Lashtria travel a lot and maintain diplomatic relations with their neighbours.

Diplomatic relations

The Land of Death only begrudgingly maintains tense diplomatic relations with Astarion. But since it is the hereafter, all the people and countries developed their own views of Lashtria.   In Astarion, it is believed that the dead live in the Lashtria until they return to the primordial ashes. It is popular to burn corpses of the deceased and drown the ashes to accelerate their journey, or to ship the bodies with their possesions into the Sea. At the beaches of the Sea are sea graveyards - fields of anchored buoys, each - a memorial to a dead person.   The Court recommends the pious followers to bury deep their dead or too lock them in fortified crypts. It is meant to be the last opportunity to sleep obliviously before they will awake to live until the end of time in the Spire - an endless upside down tower that houses (or imprisons) all the dead.   The Undying usually avoid talking about that of which they were forever deprived. But there are a few Houses of Slumber - crypts for living, where the deserving ones can find a semblance of rest.   Despite their age-old wars, both Kashta and the Pure share tradition of eating their dead so that they all stay together forever. The one who eats a part of the deceased must take part of their name, their habits and their possesions.

Astaro-lashtrian wars

Astarion  and Lashtria existed near each other for a long time, but with widespread use of ships and more acute understanding of their neighbours, conflicts started to arise.   No one knows for sure what started the first astaro-lashtrian war. Some say the current Lakshtan wanted to become immortal, or banish mortality from this world, or, maybe, Lashtrian ships started attacking. The war was mostly naval. Despite this, it was quite costly for both sides. Astarian ships even took a few sea gravestones (buoys) with each voyage to properly bid farewell to the dead crewmates at sea. Astarian forces managed to invade the southeastern edge of the Land of Death and force Lashtria to negotiate.   The second astaro-lashtrian war is said to be the revenge of Lashtria. After a few naval victories, Lashtrian forces landed in the southern part of the desert and what is now known as Pale Forest. The fighting on land was fierce and exausting, and Astarion barely managed to push back. But after the war again went to the sea, Astarum started to gain the upper hand and, again, the war was over.   The last, third war was merely a skirmish between two ships and it was quickly over, because neither side wanted to fight. After that negotiations began.

Ongoing negotiations of mutual coexistence

After the first two devastating wars, both Astarion and Lashtria wish to form some kind of agreement preventing future conflicts. It is complicated by the fact that the Land of Death wished to be as isolated as possible, and Astarion, winning side, wants to closely cooperate.

Defiance

The Court doesn't like the existence of Lashtria and encourages a variety of strategies to keep their dead to themselves. The Land of Death couldn't care less.
