Runic Ring of Holding
"You can't pick a pocket if the pocket doesn't exist."
This unassuming but heavy ring contains a set of spatial runes anchored to a precision-folded dimensional pocket. It allows the bearer to store up to 125-250 pounds or 16-32 cubic feet of nonliving matter in a stabilized extradimensional space.
The dimensional pocket can only be accessed by the bonded user. Even if stolen, the ring’s contents remain inaccessible to others. The pocket can be opened through brief mental focus while the ring is worn.
Properties
- Capacity: 125–250 lbs / 16-32 cubic feet
- Weight: 1 ounce
- Access Time: Storing an item requires an action; retrieving an item requires a bonus action
- Bound User: Only the original wearer can access the pocket
- Durability: Immune to mundane damage; resistant to magical tampering
- Detection: Radiates strong conjuration and transmutation magic unless hidden (see below)
- Living Matter: Attempting to store living creatures results in rejection or death
Optional Hidden Runes (Increases Cost)
Some rings are inscribed with additional sub-layered runes during or after crafting. These are uncommon and substantially increase both value and danger.
Rune Name | Effect | Additional Cost |
---|---|---|
Rune of Veil | Masks the ring from Detect Magic and similar divination | +3,000–5,000 gp |
Rune of Anchor | Ring teleports back to user if separated by more than 100 feet | +1,000–2,000 gp |
Rune of Collapse | If removed or tampered with, contents are destroyed and release energy | +4,000+ gp (unstable) |
Rings containing all three are considered masterworks and are usually found only as legacy items or high-level commissions.
Risks and Limitations
- Void Collapse: If the spatial fold is critically disrupted, stored contents may be lost and can explode outward (6d6 force damage in 10 ft; DC 16 Dexterity save halves).
- Restricted Use: Unregistered possession or crafting of spatial items is a punishable offense in certain parts of Mechanis.
- Counterfeits: Illicit markets sell imitation rings with unstable or corrupted folds.
