Terran Ascendency

The Terran Ascendency was founded 327 years after the Great Burn by Teresa Garner, Roderick Simmons, and the rest of the Pre-Burns and remnants of humanity who survived the cataclysmic event. With the search for additional pockets of civilization having concluded, and the discovery of the Great Failing, a new government form was requested by the survivors to take humanity to the next era. Shortly thereafter the Terran Ascendency was formed and a new calendar was created to celebrate the event.
The Terran Ascendency is a government that consists of civilian and military councils working in concert to take humanity through rebuilding, colonizing the solar system, and further into deep space. Although the charter states that both share power equally, the military controls most of the power among the Ascendency with almost 75% of the population in some sort of military service which consists of soldiers, engineers, medical officers, and support staff.
The ruling body of the Ascendency is known as the High Council and consisted of The Governor of the Ascendency, the General (later Admiral, and later still Grand Admiral) of the Terran Ascendency, the Military, Acquisitions and Internal Affairs Council Members. Eventually when humanity began to colonize other celestial bodies that the council of Colonial Councillors were included in the charter to allow for the colonies to have a voice in the governmental decisions. The Colonial Counicllors consisted of an individual from Earth, Luna, Mars, and Europa bringing the total of civilian members of the High Council to seven and military members to two. Eventually the Councillor of Exploration was added to the military purview rounding out the council to ten members.
The Ascendency is responsible for all decisions that regard the continuation of humanity, the acquisition and dispersement of resources, colonial and terraforming opportunities, and the general health and well being of humanity. In the 400 years since its founding, only the Truth Seeker Rebellion was a stain upon its rule. Although the end of the rebellion was seen as a justified response given the circumstances, it still was a break in an otherwise peaceful transition.
At present day, the Terran Ascendency is responsible for the three and a half billion humans living in the Sol system. This number includes the members of Project Vanguard set out to leave the Sol system at the 400 year celebration of the founding of the Terran Ascendency. The government and people are stable, if not in a new golden age of human development.
