The Empire of Hayden

Written by Rat_King

"Cry for Hannil, our homeland ever opulent, ever serene, and ever glorious!"

— Emperor Oswain "The Red" Lowthe II

Once the rulers of the great skies. Legendary wyvern riders, fearsome and brave now aided by machineries of steam conquer lands far from Seneca. Born from the ashes of the Cascan empire many would tremble under the flag of the twin-headed wyvern. An empire great and terrible still stands as one of the major players in Seneca.

Structure

As it stands, the empire of Hayden is an empire. Thus uses imperial titles for it's sovereign. The hierarchy of power and ranks of nobility are as follows:
  1. The Emperor/Empress - the ruler of Hayden as well as it's council.

  3. Duke/Duchess - Ducal rulers outside of Hannil islands but still Senecan.
  4. Margrave/Margravine - A noble or military commander assigned to frontier regions to defend the borders of the empire.
  5. Viceroy/Vicereine - Usually a title given to non-Senecans outside of Seneca. A temporary title granted by the emperor to native rulers of conquered lands so that they may rule the territory on behalf of the emperor and under the emperor. This title is effective if the viceroy still lives or if the guy who put them there is still alive (i.e the emperor).

Public Agenda

As a major player in Senecan politics, they are highly aware of the riches that the continent of Carrion posses as they scramble for land alongside the other Senecan realms that had marked their territory in Carrion. The empire would currently postpone its expansion towards Carrion as the local Nazca become more fierce and they are currently experiencing revolts in their colonies as well as a war against The empire of Gascony. For now, they would be focusing on snuffing out colonial rebels and fighting the war against Gascony.

Assets

The empire of Hayden is well known for its legendary wyvern riders. Now they claim to have trained more than 1000 wyvern riders alongside 200 splendid airships that carpet bomb whatever it is below it with explosives. Most of its professional army stands at the continent of Carrion, policing its viceroyalties and fighting an overseas war with its longtime rival the empire of Gascony.

History

The history of Hayden

The Collapse of the Cascan Empire and the 1st Kingdom of Hayden

At the collapse of the Cascan empire, the Hannilan rebellions took over the old empire's territories as petty kingdoms rise from its ashes. One such kingdom ruled over nearly half of the island stretching from Westmark up to the Borosine, It was the 1st Kingdom of Hayden. Not much has been done with the first kingdom other than it was often rivaled by the neighboring Shelland kingdom in a never-ending back and forth against each other. The kingdoms were often targets for Roevingian raiders. The first kingdom is greatly known for founding and constructing the city of Dragmoor which would become it's de facto capital in generations to come. The first kingdom ruled two generations and fell after the kingdom of Gascony crossed the Hannilan channel and conquered both kingdoms.

Under the Gasconic Kingdom and the rise of house Dolloway

After the invasion of Gascony, Hannilan society took a shift in their daily way of life. It became a melting pot of culture between the island and the mainland Senecans. Slowly but surely their culture was changing. Minor rebellions took place under the Gasconic rule but will seemingly be crushed under its heel. The rebellions that took place often failed because it was mostly unorganized and rowdy, trust can't seem to be built between the Hannilan territories because each of their leaders would claim to be the ruler of a new Hannilan kingdom. Animosity was often common between Hannilan houses and Gascony was often eager to let them fight among themselves to keep leverage over the island.   A minor noble of Brisby named Gawaine Dolloway wished to rid the island Gasconians and become a king himself but as he noticed his city won't stand much of a chance against a Gasconic army. He would need allies, one that would be crucial in overthrowing Gasconic dukes out of the Island. And to make allies it would require of him to make peace with his Hannilan foes, namely house Chester which fought alongside the kingdom of Shelland and the Dolloways was of Hayden. He would marry lady Wilmot Chester of Montcroix cementing an alliance and union between the two houses.   With the allies he had gathered, he mustered his forces and marched his army to Dragmoor, his great rebellion motivated the people to join him in his strife. With all of the power that he had accumulated, he drove out the Gasconians off the island. Declaring themselves to be independent and openly declares war on Gascony which ended on a white peace.

Golden Age of Hayden

The whole island became united under house Dolloway as lord Gawain became king Gawain, crowned by his allies and supporters as they reform the kingdom Hayden. A newborn kingdom would usually be easy pickings for long-standing realms such as Gascony and Wesschelia but they would soon feel the fire of Dennish wyverns as the people would rediscover the techniques of Tomkin Grigas the wyvern rider. This knowledge allowed the kingdom to be a powerful staying force in the continent. Warring amongst the three realms would be inevitable but during this era, the kingdom of Hayden would often come on top. With constant victories of war Hayden became a rich country. This would be the period that Dennish artists would constantly produce masterpieces commissioned by the royal crown. Prosperity and revelry were the norms.

Lowthe Rebellion

After their golden age, the kingdom went through a nosedive of blunders. Namely that the Dolloway kings became decadent and despotic in their time as rulers. Constantly losing wars and territories they would heavily tax the populace to cover up their blunders and launch another war in revenge which they would predictably lose. House Lowthe of Westmark had been faithful servants of the crown they were even there when Oswain rebelled against Gascony, but now they face the consequences of the sovereign's mistakes which forces them to act against their king. The king during this period was Lefwald Dolloway III, and rebelling against him was Osbert Lowthe his own childhood friend. After a successful rebellion and being beaten back to the corner king Lefwald committed suicide and was usurped by Osbert. He and his line would rule the kingdom from this day on and became known as King Osbert Lowthe I.

The Empire of Hayden

With the discovery of a new continent, the wyvern kings of Hayden turn their eyes to Carrion with a promise of gold and glory. King Oswain Lowthe I the grandson of Osbert, led expedition after expedition determined to form colonies in the new world. He would often war against the Nazca through manifest destiny, His expeditions were overwhelmingly successful, the Nazca weren't much of a challenge against the Dennish wielding rifles on the backs of wyverns. His leadership granted him an empire to rule.   The empire would often find themselves at war with their long-time rivals the empire of Gasconia, they would rarely fight at their home continent anymore but instead found a new battleground in the new world.

Hayden at the contemporary times

The empire seems to be doing well for itself nowadays, as usual, they are currently at war with Gasconia and revolts are present within their colonies. Maxwell Osbert Lowthe II stands as the emperor after Gasconian spies assasinated his father, Barret Sigor Lowthe II, at 1203 No.Di., the emperor returned the favor by burning the captured Lucatiel relatives, his rival emperor Oliver Lucatiel was not pleased of his actions and staged an attempt on his life, this failed. The worst was yet to come when emperor Maxwell captured the Gasconic crown prince in battle, on which he made an offer in exchange for the crown prince's life. He demanded that Gasconia would pay him 10000 Denars and surrender some lands in Carrion. This was refused and the prince met the chopping block.   A year later Oliver would fall to his illness and be succeeded by his young daughter, Maxwell feels that the young empress wouldn't pose much of a threat to his empire thus he had shifted his focus on the rebellion.

Military

The Dragoons are highly trained riflemen that ride wyverns. Dragoon training is noted to be extremely difficult because the rider has to form a bond with his mount and more often than not death during training seems to be the case for either the rider or the wyvern. But once a dragoon is trained and ready they would fearsome and swift in the skies.

Technological Level

The scientific level of the Dennish is said to be on par with most Senecan realms. Machineries of steam hold sway over the industry.

Religion

The empire follows the Senecan Pantheon.

Agriculture & Industry

Ever since the rise of steam-powered engines, they have been manufacturing ironclad warships and airships to aid them in their conquest in Carrion. Their mining industry seems to be booming as well as the new world has a surplus of untouched steel and coal mines.

Trade & Transport

They have been old trading partners with the kingdom of Pavia and Baran Los through sea trade. They would even trade with the foreign Nazca for some corn, cocoa, and isca berries.

Education

A Dennish citizen is entitled to basic education funded by its government but not all pursue it for it is not mandatory. Private organizations usually run collegiums rather than their own government. Recently Nazca had been allowed to study in Hannil for there are no collegiums or any schools at all built in the colonies, though Nazca of noble blood are only allowed to travel to the island of Hannil
