Netherlock Colleges
Originally founded in the homelands of the Asarans, the colleges have since spread to every other region of the continent, providing a place for anyone to come and unlock their potential in bending the elements to their will. While in any other society the boons and power the colleges grant would be seen as a gift, the world around them and it's decaying state was directly caused by the magics unleashed by schools such as these and their Prime representations. Those who choose or are selected to attend a school do so out of a sense of duty and honor, seeking to bring balance to their pocket of the world while attempts are made to find a new world unscoured by the passage of time.
The purpose of the colleges in modern day is to provide a means of harnessing the elements to further the survival of the races while a new home is located.The air of the land is choked with vile gases that can snuff the life out of a man before he realizes he cannot breathe, the water's are polluted irreparably, proving resilient to all non-alchemical or magical means. The land is infertile, the metal corroded, the trees dying, and the animals sickened or feral. The magics learned here worsen the effect overall, but provide a remedy for those closest to the source. The lands a mile away may grow infertile, but here and now a thriving farm can be made. The air may be toxic, but here and now the air is freshened and clear. Magic is to be treasured and never used lightly.
The ultimate goal of the colleges is to one day commune with the elements well enough to stop the seemingly inevitable corrosion that accompanies the use of magic. All current research is destined towards furthering that goal or the goal of escaping this world.
