The World Tree Myth in Arylon | World Anvil

The World Tree

The World Tree holds all the planes and realms together. Each realm has a massive physical tree which is a manifestation of the real tree. The Azurins have concluded that these smaller trees are not only magical links to the original, they are actually spores of it, little pieces of the tree that connect the realms to each other. Each tree looks different, reflecting the realm or place it is in. The trees are generally located in the northernmost point in its realm. The one realm shared by all the others is the Realm of the Dead. In it, there stands a huge white tree with red leaves that fall slowly for all eternity. Beneath its branches, the dead wait until the Avatar of Death from their religion comes to collect them.

How many Realms/Planes?

Realms are ruled by gods or immortals. The immortals have smaller realms than the gods. There is no way to know how many there are, for there are as many realms are there are gods and immortals. The realms high in the branches of the World tree are the realms of the Divines beings. The ones nearer the roots of the Tree belong to the various versions of the Underworld. In the Fae Realm, of the Good Kingdom, the capital city was built around the base of their Tree. The Fae Realm is run by King Oberon, an immortal. The Fae dismisses the gods, especially the Noble Fae, who think of themselves as gods and expect their followers to worship them accordingly. The planes have no god or immortal ruling over them. The Physical Plane is the largest of these, and is connected to the Realms through the religions of the residents of the plane. Besides the Physical plane, the other known planes are The Golden Clocktower, The Great Library, The Endless Sea, The Endless Sky, The Endless Grasslands, and The Eternal Fire.

Where is the main world tree?

The World Tree is more massive that all the realms and planes together. It is the size of a galaxy. To see the whole of it, one would have to escape the Arbor Sphere that surrounds it and travel and 100 million miles through space. The Tree is self-aware and can tap into its spores on each realm or plane. The planes and realms exist on the Tree itself. The Physical Plane sits in the middle, on the trunk. It is surrounded by a crystal-like dome that contains all the known planets and other celestial objects.
