Magic Predators

After the Mageblast that destroyed the Arcane Laboratory and brought the study of magic in the Tryvyum Trade Consortium to a halt, the use of magic has been limited to a handful of heavily vetted individuals that are only allowed to practice under strict government supervision. Steep penalties have been levied against those that ignore these restrictions, but there are many that still seek to expand their knowledge of the arcane or use it to aid them in their endeavors. 

Though not a common occurrence, those that practice magic in secret often vanish under bizarre circumstances. If found, they are usually dead or insane and what is left of them clearly underwent a harrowing experience. Though the official narrative is that they were the victims of their own reckless endangerment and that their misfortune should be a cautionary tale for those that don't respect the dangers of magic, many believe something far more nefarious is afoot. Rumors have begun to circulate of beings that can detect the use of magic and hunt its practitioners. Coupled with claims of strange figures and creatures far more bizarre than normal for the region, it certainly seems like someone or something is lurking in the shadows. Whether they work for the Consort or act on their own is still debated in hushed tones, but it's the belief of many that whoever or whatever is hunting magic users is not a product of nature and poses a danger to anyone in close proximity to its prey.
