Land of the Lost: Session 9 Report
General Summary
The party dressed what wounds they could before continuing their siege. The thick stone doors at the top of the staircase proved difficult to open, but they managed to get one of them ajar. Peeking through the gap proved risky as the enemy on the other side of the door was ready to throw rocks and rubble at them. Braving the barrage, Ahgythah squeezed through the gap to get on the other side of the door and pull. Her armor shielded her from the enemies' projectiles while she helped clear away the rubble blocking the door and pull it open just in time for the forces of Sanctum and the enemy to clash in battle.
Now that the battle had commenced, the party could see that the room was a large hall that likely once served as a throne room. Now, the floor was coated in blood and dotted with piles of flesh and bones. It was filled with several dozen hideous creatures ranging from Deepfolk and Sect of various sizes, several zombified creatures, and a strange lizard-like being with additional libs grafted to its body. The Hermit identified the stranger as an ancient mage similar to himself and was likely the one that taught the Deepfolk necromancy.
The battle was tough and many from Sanctum fell. Many proved their heroism by holding their own against much larger enemies and risking their lives to try and save their fallen allies. The mysterious Ahedyn proved especially useful as she possessed powerful Magic, using her own blood as a conduit and as weapons that cut through even the toughest enemy, but at the cost of her own health.
After the first wave of enemies was defeated, the necromancer began to animate masses of blood, bone, and flesh that formed from the carcasses scattered around the chamber. These proved difficult to destroy, but the party and their allies learned that columns made of bone, tendons, and some magical elements served as conduits for the necromancer's Magic. They prioritized the destruction of these columns, preventing any more abominations from being animated.
With the first two waves complete, the larger of the monsters, which seemed to serve as the rulers of the hive, along with several that had several additional limbs magically grafted to their bodies, charged towards the dwindling army of Sanctum. These claimed several more lives, but the party and their allies were able to defeat them, though several of the party members had taken many wounds. The necromancer attempted to escape, but was stopped by a warrior of Sanctum, allowing those still able to fight to band together. This too, proved difficult as the necromancer was a powerful mage, but even its powerful Magic was unable to halt the blades of a dozen attackers and it fell, but not without one final surprise. As the necromancer's body crumbled, its spirit leapt into the carcasses of one of the larger Sect, possessing and reanimating it. This fight was short as this new vessel was already weak and easily broken, but not without taking a few more down with it.
When the the last abomination fell to the floor in pieces, the party set to work attending to the fallen. Thanks to their efforts, only six warriors of Sanctum lost their lives, though there were many that would likely face a long road to recovery and some would carry their injuries with them for the rest of their lives. The party members themselves were also badly injured and were in no condition to continue their journey. They agreed to return to Sanctum to recover and figure out what their next moves would be.
