Consortium Languages
The languages used through the Consortium are each combinations of the individual tongues of the tribes or clans that founded these nations. As a result, there are few specific rules and spellings of many things, especially since not all of them have a written language to accompany them. However, there are a few conventions that can be identified, particularly for picking names for individuals from these nations.
Cogyn: The language of Cogys is the most developed of all the languages. It is more elogant and elborate than the other tongues and is heavily influenced by their study of the ancient civilization their nation is built atop of. Of note, the letter Q does not exist in Cogyn. Every Cogyn has a personal name given to them at birth that they use among friends and family. Most frequently, they will be refered to by their job, position, or role, such as delver, professor, researcher, and student. In a group where mutiple people share a role, they will follow their professional name with their personal one. Here are some examples of personal names: Akadem, Boson, Calium, Dyson, Ekart, Gaje, Hidron, Idyn, Kystal, Lytho, Minral, Nytro, Obsere, Perciv, Rayto, Sudy, Totale, Utily, Vakum, Waht, Xeray, Yaxis, and Zyence.
Ohedyn : The national language of the same name has no written component, so the rules are not well-defined. Their speach is noticably soft and avoids hard or harsh sounds. Hand signals actually play a significant role in their communication as many prefer not to engage verbally, though this somatic language hardly suffices as a form of sign language as it is just is more vague than the language itself. Intuition and context plan a massive role with some members of the nation defering completely to body language to communicate with each other. Those that insist on having names or require them for their profession usually only get one name, relying on non-verbal ques to distinguish themselves from the others. This can be very challenging for foriegners to understand, but those that grow up in this society become adept at recognizing others through mostly non-verbal communication and have excellent insight. Here are some examples of Ohedyn Names (keep in mind these are mostly pheonetical as there is no written component to the language: Ayem, Celes, Esser, Fower, Hom, I, Leff, Mayow, Omer, Rue, Sowar, Umair, Vose, Winer, and Yow.
Morydan: The language of Morydal is harsh and sharp language. Though there is no written component, symbols are used to communicate concepts, mostly threats and warnings. With the struggle for survival plays such a significant role in their culture, most Morydans don't receive a name until they have proven themselves. Most often this comes about as a result of surviving a natural hazard, defeating a beast, or discovering a resource such as oasis or ruin. They will then be given a name in association with this deed such as Breaker, Climber, Guardian, Persuer, Slayer, Tracker, or Victor. This also serves as a title and can be replaced by a more significant act. In a sense, their name is their legacy. It is rare that a Mordyan will get a derogatory name as any events that would do so usually result in death or banishment, which is shortly followed by death.
Each clan also has a name, usually associated with what they are known for. In modern Morydal, this is related to their role within the nation such as explorers, miners, and waterguards. Some exampels of clan names are Cliffwatchers, Dunestriders, Lostseekers, Rockbreakers, and Waterscouts. When two or more clans meet, their name is followed their clan name. For example: Slayer of the Lostseekers.
Since the formation of the Consortium, the struggle for survival isn't as singificant as it was in Mordyal's past, so it is becoming more difficult to not repeat titles, both among indivduals and clans. As a result, some closer-nit groups will come up with informal titles to each other, which take on the role of names in most other cultures.
Tryvym: Being a mix of all three of these nations, the official language of the Consortium is still evolving. There are three elements to this language: Somatic, Verbal, and Written.
- The somatic sign-language of Tryvym is by far the most developed as it utilizes gestures and imitations to communicate shared concepts without needing to translate between verbal or written languages. This is a mix of the body-language on Ohedyn and symbols of Morydyn.
- The verbal language is most-similar to Cogyn with the incorporation of many Ohedyn and Moryden words. Since Cogys leads the effort in forming this new language, it is largely based on their own communication structure while allowing the other nations to maintain their dialectual pecularities. This is point of contention in the Consortium as it seems like Cogys is trying to force the other nations to learn Cogyn instead of creating a truly combined language.
- The written component is the least developed as only one of the three nations even uses an alphabet-based written language. Asa a result, any writing in shared Consortium locations such as Amyhra is a combination of Cogyn text, Morydyn symbols, or depictions of Tryvym sign-language.
