Theraska

Great Bear (a.k.a. The Legendary Dire Bear)

Towering over nearly all creatures to walk Armea, the monumental Theraska is a one-of-a-kind Dire Bear of legend. He is the greatest of his kind, and does not often deal with mortals in any way. Residing in the southern end of The Deep in Eregoth, he guards the forests and wild lands with a viciousness tempered by great wisdom. None survive his onslaught, should he be roused to anger, but those with a respect for nature are tolerated. The local druids of northern Eregoth pay homage to him and his will.

Personal history

In the month leading up to the Battle of Red Lake, Theraska was approached by a group of adventurers seeking passage through his lands. They sought to save Quethon Abot Jayvos, the wyrmling World Dragon from Ethemble, from the clutches of Rocs living in Theraska's lands. The Great Bear did not at first see a reason to let the group pass, but relented when the adventurers promised to steer Quethon towards a more balanced path in the future. Later that day, Theraska's disciple, the Centaur Archdruid named Asur, was similarly approached, and convinced of the adventurers' plans. His only guaranteed way to save the young dragon, however, was to betray the great Roc which lived atop his rocky crag, and thus Asur slit the mighty beast's throat so that Quethon could go free. The loss of such a venerable creature as the great Roc was intolerable to Theraska, who smote the centaur druid by tearing him in half, though Asur accepted his fate for what he had done willingly. In recompense, a druid named Lakuna from the party saving Quethon used a powerful scroll of True Resurrection upon the Roc, so that its place in the natural order could be restored, which Theraska was grateful for.   Over the course of the Battle of Red Lake, another of Theraska's archdruid disciples, Keyleth Shava, was dragged into the fighting against House Oakenshield. She eventually arrived before Theraska and petitioned for his intervention in the battle, but in his wisdom the Great Bear declined. Perhaps this was in anticipation of the return of Sozkeden Valkar, and the dark age to come under the dread vampire lord, however Theraska is sparing with his words on such things.
