Gluth, The Insatiable Prince, The Demon Lord of Consumption

There is only hunger. No compassion. No remorse. Only a need to devour.’

The popular image of the demon is one of a mindless being driven by the most basic, unbridled drives. Gluth, the Insatiable Prince and Demon Lord of Consumption embodies this concept. Gluth is motivated solely by the need to eat and fulfill its hunger, though this will never be achieved. It has been said that in life, Gluth’s need for power and influence manifested in a lust for food that persisted after death, and stayed with them after death. Now there is only hunger. No compassion. No remorse. Only a need to devour.   Gluth is often thought of as a mindless being, but this assumption conceals a much darker truth. Gluth is actually quite intelligent, but focuses all of this intellect into hunting. As such, Gluth is a terrifying predator with a number of tactics and tricks up its sleeve. Gluth enjoys hunting almost as much as eating, taking pleasure in the terror upon the faces of its prey. Gluth sees all others as prey, and any being strong enough to challenge Gluth will surely become a worthy meal.   Gluth holds dominion over gnolls, oozes and troglodytes, each terrible race paying homage to the Insatiable Prince and representing an aspect of their master’s power. Gnolls are its predatory instincts and crazed focus, oozes its raw hunger and need to consume, and troglodytes its will to overcome all others. There is much strife amongst the three, with the oozes attempting to consume all in their path, including other followers of Gluth. Neither gnolls nor troglodytes tolerate entities that act differently from themselves - for those in Gluth’s power, existence is a zero-sum game and cooperation will always give way to consumption.   Alongside the monstrosities tied to Gluth by their very natures, a variety of individuals are vulnerable to falling under its demonic thrall. Those who see themselves as superior may find that belief twisted into viewing others as nothing more than animals, drawing them toward work as mercenaries or assassins for hire, or rising to heights of political power by slandering their enemies and applying increasingly zealous dictates. The unchecked hunger for power and domination calls to Gluth like a dinner bell, and once the unwary fall under its influence they are doomed to be consumed by it.
