Personal history

Chastain grew up in the Caspin Forest in Eregoth, raised by two Elvish fathers: Ovargwed and Laeredil Beinoss. Following the traditions of their community, Chastain spent their adolescence as an acolyte of the Red Moon. Always small and nimble, Chastain was encouraged from a young age to play to their strengths, including archery and fencing. As they came of age, they grew suspicious of religious teachings, with that suspicion eventually spilling into every other aspect of their life, leaving them only trusting in their fathers.   Leaving the temple life behind, Chastain traveled throughout Eregoth and the nearby islands where they found new teachers who provided specialized skills and training. Their small stature, nimbleness, and accuracy with ranged weapons led them to thievery, where they excelled. This led them to the town of Emril, where they found common cause with another traveler for the first time in their life; the druid Chastain now traveled with shared their abhorrence to the wanton destruction of the Deep and its sacred sites that Emril represented. Finding their way into the forest to an ancient temple to lost gods, Chastain put their thieving skills to good use to open a door that had remained sealed for time immemorial thanks to a potent blood-lock, which Chastain was able to bypass entirely. Tapping into their magical powers, Chastain lured a local gnome who they had seen profaning the ancient sites in the area into the temple after them, wherein the gnome's blood was used to open several doors to reach deeper into the temple.   Though the sacrifices made inside the temple to the lost gods had only been for idle curiosity, Chastain did at last find people with whom they could connect, those being Rose Medici and a dwarf named Jensen. Following the escapades in the temple, this group was present for the initial Silvershield attack on Emril. Despite their previous disdain towards the town, Chastain recognized that the Silvershields were nothing more than Oakenshield thugs, and that the entire town did not merit slaughter at their hands. Alongside a growing circle of like-minded adventurers, Chastain helped lead the people of Emril into the nearby hills to escape imminent death at the hands of the Silvershields. Knowing the mercenaries would not leave loose ends, the group distracted them by making a stand at a ruined castle in the swamps north of Red Lake. Withstanding the full force of the Silvershields, Chastain and their newfound allies held out for nearly a week of constant siege. During an attempt at negotiations, Chastain discovered the Silvershields were undermining the castle walls with the intent to blow up a section with flaming pigs, which they dealt with handily by sealing off the tunnel to asphyxiate everyone inside, successfully stopping the plot.   Eventually the party was relieved by the Dulithir Regulars, who sent them to Aynor to assist Lord Fenheart. Swayed by Fenheart's genuine compassion towards the people of Eregoth, set against the Oakenshields by their constant cruelty, and seeking atonement for their temple adventures, Chastain fought for House Fenheart during the Battle of Red Lake. While in Aynor preparing for battle, Chastain got in contact with the leader of Eregoth's Thieves' Guild, the massive Tabaxi named Dax, who offered a deal to them to assassinate any of Fenheart's generals in exchange for ten thousand gold and assistance with magical artifacts. Not trusting Dax to keep his end of the deal, Chastain took the threat to Lord Fenheart directly because it felt like the right thing to do, and also to see what would result. Ultimately, Chastain joined the final assault against Lord Oakenshield himself, fighting through the front line infantry that guarded the base of the hill, and witnessing the 14th Lord drain Oakenshield of his blood in person.   Knowing that Dax would find out and seek retribution for their betrayal, Chastain went into hiding after the battle. Surfacing in the capital, Torellon, they encountered a restless spirit at the site of a decades-old murder scene. Chastain saw a vision of the murder, perpetrated by a Grey Robe who was tapping into forbidden Keldani pact-magic. They promised the spirit to help them find rest, which bound the spirit to them until the murderer is brought to justice. It was during the stay in Torellon that Chastain was confronted by Dax. In recompense for Chastain's betrayal, the Tabaxi kingpin had Chastain assassinate the sitting regent of Eregoth. Poisoning the unfortunate man's pillow, Chastain was successful in this endeavor, after which they attempted to resolve the bound spirit's murder by pretending to apply to the Grey Robe Tower as a student. This attempt was thwarted when a Grey Robe with particular interest in all of the artifacts Chastain had on their person from adventuring asked to take them for examining, which Chastain adamantly refused. This disagreement led to golems being summoned, and Chastain promptly fled the country.   Taking a ship via the Medici, Chastain arrived in the Undying Pactland of Keldan. There, in the city of Holdramth, they got in contact with the local The Hooded Guild Hooded Guild, seeking an Amulet of Proof Against Detection and Location. Chastain proved their value to the Hooded Guild, and took passage on a guild ship headed towards the Seeker Pactland, where they met the Wood Elf sharpshooter Sasha, the Dragonborn sorcerer Kriv, and the Tiefling Captain Arlaina. Chastain's motives for doing so mainly rest in getting further away from the Grey Robes of Eregoth and to better understand pact-magic, but they have come to appreciate those they now travel with.
