Personal history
Most of Artemisia's youth is shrouded in mystery. Stories say she is the daughter of a sea merchant and her family was not well off. As a young girl, she wished to go on a trading expedition to with her father and upon being told she could not because her long hair would catch in the ship's ropes, she cut off most of her hair to embarrass her father into taking her. After that she knew nothing but the sea. When she grew up she quickly became popular among the port towns and cities. She built up a reputation as an expert seafaring navigator and a fearsome fighter. She acquired her first captaincy at the age of 25, and became a privateer for whomever could afford her services.
She took Safina onto her ship, The Royal Corsair, while he was searching for Balefire. They argued some of the time about the nature of the world, but she ultimately took him under her wing and taught him about what it took to become a seasoned sailor.
