War of Souls

Military action

On this day Demonic Hordes from the Abyss and Legions of Devils from the Nine Hells poured through into the world of Arelia in attempt to lay claim to it. The chaos of two enemy forces arriving at the same plane made them ignore their primary goal in favor for preventing the other from claiming what they thought theirs already. The gods were not pleased. They unleashed their divine fury in the form of their mortal champions leading an army made of every mortal race on Arelia. Thus began the War of Souls.

Nine portals opened up adjacent to one another. Each one on the same continent. Yet what came out were two enemy armies who waged war with one another for eons. Each one thinking they found a new realm prime for the taking. Each enraged their long enemy had arrived planning the same thing. The ensuing battle gave the goddesses Arelia and Ameriel time to warn their father and mother who rallied all the gods and goddesses as each one called upon a mortal soul to become their champion among mortals and lead them all in a unified front against a great enemy. The battle was at first chaotic. The endless hordes of demons poured through their portals caring not for the many casualties they endured. The disciplined and cunning devils charging in with infernal engines among them as well as several pit fiends leading entire divisions of their forces. Despite this, the mortals rallied and did so quickly. Following the great champions of their own people, they all threw aside their own squabbles with one another and formed a single unified front. The last line of defense for all souls. The great champions working together and encouraging their kin to do the same. Leading by example and forming new tactics utilizing each other's strengths and making up for the other's weaknesses. Such a force the world has never seen before. The words of rulers were cast aside as the great champions represented the will of the gods themselves, none could argue and any who tried were quickly corrected.
