History of Ardyn

    The Founding
    Era beginning/end

The Founding was the first age of Ardyn. During this time the Gods brought forth mortal creatures to inhabit the realm and faced much resistance from chaotic and titanic elemental beings formed from the natural material of Ardyn itself. These creatures were known as the Primordials. The conflict with the Primordials culminated with the Gods splitting into three separate factions and a divine war between The Profane Gods and the Dawn Deities. The age ended with The Profane Gods being banished from Ardyn and the defeat of the Primordial titans.

Creation of mortals, magic and dragons
    Founding

During this first age, the gods created the elves, dwarves, and gnomes, along with as many other races as they had inspiration for. Because the world was still a dangerous place ruled by elemental chaos, many of these children were killed in the earliest days.   Saddened by the loss of so many children, the gods Mystra and Corellon gifted mortals with arcane magic so they might better defend themselves. The Dragons Metallic were created by Bahamut to aid in the defense of the Children of Creation and soon after, came the first hatching of the Dragonborn. With the dragons' help, civilization began to flourish and mortals first offered worship (and purpose) to their creators.

    The Primordial Wars
    Military action

Elemental titans that had lain beneath the land since before the coming of the gods now rose up to wreak havoc on the gods' creations. Their mass carnage invited the attention of demons from the Abyss, who came to feast on the remains and corrupt all that they touched.

The Dawn Deities vs The Profane Gods
    Military action

As the Primordials continued to devastate creation, three factions arose between the gods. The Dawn Deities wished to stay on Ardyn and conquer the Primordials, leaving the land safe for their children. The Profane Gods, frustrated by their losses, gave up; some gave in to madness, and some began twisting their creations and joining forces with the madness of the Abyss. The Neutral Deities seemed altogether disinterested with choosing sides in this conflict and decided to remain impassive, focusing on helping or hindering where they saw fit.   The Dawn Deities, with the help of their mortal champions, ultimately destroyed the Primordials and banished the Profane Gods from the Material Plane for their betrayal.

    Aon is Founded
    Founding

With peace finally achieved, the original mortal children of the Gods called elves began to flourish and the first true civilization was able to take root on Ardyn. The elves settled onto a vast, golden continent they named The Exalted Expanse and established their capital city where Gods and mortals alike would come to inhabit. It was called the Divine Capital of Aon, and the "Cradle of Dawn."

    The Blooming
    Era beginning/end

The Second Age of Ardyn. Civilization was prospering for ages after the defeat of the Profane Gods. The Dwarves learned how to harness the rock and earth around them becoming skilled forge smiths. Halflings took to tilling the soil and beautiful flora and fauna spread across the lands. The elves continued to impress their creators, learning how to tap into the weave of magic created by Mystra that encompassed Ardyn. Primitive humans began to flourish near the end of the Blooming and took prominence across the world, eager to show the realm what they could be capable of.

    The Magus Era
    Era beginning/end

The Magus Era was the third age of Ardyn. During this time, mortals tested the limits of arcane power and challenged the gods who had created them. It ended with the Profane Gods return to Ardyn and an assault on Aon.

    1

    Rise of the Humans

The youngest children of the Dawn Deities, humans, took to the gifts on the realm of Ardyn like fire spreading through a forest. While the other races found certain skills as specialities, the humans learned all of these skills with a quickness and adeptness that pleased the Dawn Deities greatly. Filled with a sense of wonder, a group of humans moved east off the continent of Gwessen and landed on The Exalted Expanse, soon becoming the prominent race on the continent. The elves who first settled here became very friendly with the humans but moved out of the Divine Capital of Aon and retreated to the Ironbark Thicket and the jungles of Krahl.

    Return of the Profane Gods

One man, Archmage Vecruth Na’Qirr, sought to harness the untapped power of the Profane Gods. He broke open their planar prisons, where they had been spawning hungry creations of their own, and released them back into the Material Plane. Driven by an urge for domination, the exiled gods came forth from their broken prisons, enthralled the mage who had freed them, and founded a kingdom of their own on the far end of the continent of Orandala.

The Kingdom of Dagbreek and the first assault on Aon.

The Profane Gods created their own unholy kingdom in the far west continent of Orandala called Dagbreek. From Dagbreek, the Profane Gods spread their influence and eventually made an assault on the bastion of Aon. The battle lasted twenty days and nights but, with the divine aid of the Dawn Deities, Aon and its inhabitants stood triumphant, if battered, at the end.   This assault left both mortals and gods alike shaken. Mortals turned their arcane powers to the forging of heroic weapons, and the gods prepared for war.

    The Scourging
    Era beginning/end

The Scourging was the fourth age of Ardyn that encompassed the second war against The Profane Gods, which devastated civilization and in some cases rearranged the geography of the realm. The exact timeframe is uncertain as most written records were destroyed in the battles but it is estimated to have taken place over 1500 years ago. Following the assault on Aon, conflict against The Profane Gods was rejoined. Most cities that had sprung up during The Magus Era were reduced to ash, leaving Aon once again as the sole bastion of civilization. Historians estimate that no more than a third of the world's population survived this war. The age ended with the defeat of Tharizdun and the construction of the Divine Gate.

    Disaster / Destruction

During the battles of the Scourging, Archmage Vecruth began a ritual to summon a comet from the alien reaches of the Far Realm to come crashing onto Ardyn in an effort to destroy the Dawn Deities forces. Successful in his efforts; a massive comet known as the Warpstar crashed into Dawn Bane obliterating both the armies of Dawn Deities and Profane Gods. The endless madness of the Far Realm radiated off the Waprstar and corrupted the land around it into a wasteland of death and horror. Archmage Vecruth, thought to have perished when the comet crashed, managed to escape during this period of chaos.

    Creation of the Divine Gate
    Era beginning/end

In the end, the kingdom of Dagbreek was defeated and the Profane Gods were banished once more, but now with the knowledge and fear that they could return again. While the mortal world recovered slowly from the devastation it had endured, the Dawn Deities became disheartened that their children would cause such destruction and were left to ponder how they might prevent a third divine war. Ultimately the Dawn Deities forgave their children but came to the decision that they must leave this realm in order to ensure its safety. Hoping to seal away the Profane Gods for good, both the Dawn and Neutral Deities retreated from the Material Plane. Behind themselves and their defeated brethren, they erected a metaphysical barrier known as the Divine Gate, which would prevent any god from physically crossing over into mortal realms.

    The Restoration
    Era beginning/end

The fifth age of Ardyn, also known as The Restoration, encompassed the time after the Scourging. After the events of The Scourging and the construction of the Divine Gate, relative peace came over the realm of Ardyn for many years. Civilizations were able to begin anew and some races previously unknown quickly rose to prominence. In later years, the forces of the brutal and warmongering Adamant Ascendancy swelled on the continent of Krahl while various nobles and warriors squabbled over the lands of The Exalted Expanse resulting in countless civil wars and battles over the years with rulership changing hands every few decades. During this time, the elves of The Exalted Expanse further secluded themselves from the rest of the world, becoming sullen and angry that the warring races forced their beloved deities to leave them behind.

    The Icelost Years
    Disaster / Destruction

The Icelost Years refer to an invasion of the continent of the Exalted Expanse by Errevon the Rimelord, an elemental behemoth of the Frostfell   Following the long and devastating Scattered War, the Exalted Expanse was significantly weakened. Not two years into Sovereign Crann's reign, a cataclysm struck, testing the limits of the newly formed Dawn Delegation. The white dragon Skysunder, acting as Errevon's scout to find the weakest points between the planes, used an existing tear between planes located in what would later be named Frostsummit. She saw the battered and divided realm, and notified Errevon that it would be advantageous to strike. During a celestial solstice, the forces of the Frostfell did so, further opening the rift and invading the Material Plane with their forces of living blizzards and frost giants.

    Archmage Vecruth Returns
    Miscellaneous

While the rest of the world rebuilt itself from the ashes of The Scourging, Archmage Vecruth, long thought to have been dead, unlocked the secrets of Lichdom and never ceased his tireless work to rule supreme over Ardyn. Vecruth spent his years in hiding scouring the forgotten reaches of this world for the ancient rites The Raven Queen had performed in order to ascend to Godhood, so that he may claim divinity and mark Ardyn as his domain. Eventually, Vecruth made his return known and amassed a large cult following of powerful arcane users in the countryside of The Exalted Expanse and began marching upon Aon, unleashing massive amounts of arcane destruction in their wake aided by the weak leadership in place from the countless years of civil wars.

Celesta’s armies cornered the Archmage at his base of operations in the ruins of Dawn Bane until finally, Celesta alone, entered into his throne room. As she was within, Ardyn’s third moon curiously disappeared from the night sky as a massive wave of necromantic energy washed out of the palace. A few moments later, Celesta emerged from the keep with her radiant, dual-bladed scimitar “Hope’s Edge” bathed in the blood of the fallen Archmage.

The War Begins and Celesta Rises
    Military action

Despair and fear fell upon the current ruler of the Expanse, Sovereign Devron Swann; he fled the continent and he left the people to fend for themselves against Vecruth’s devastation. However; a seemingly unimportant half-elven captain in the Sovereign's army named Celesta - who traced her lineage back to the first elven children - stood defiant. Not content to simply allow this world to fall into ruin, Celesta took it upon herself to rally the people of The Exalted Expanse against Vecruth and led them in battles that lasted nearly 2 years. Slowly, word of Celesta’s heroics spread to the wider world and her forces were bolstered by armies from the other continents, and Vecruth’s forces were pushed back towards his keep on the edges of The Warpstar Wastes in the ruins of the Profane God's unholy fortress of Dawn Bane.

Celesta was celebrated as one of the greatest heroes of legend and the conflict with Vecruth was dubbed The Morning War by historians, as it represented a new day for civilization in the realm. Celesta's Reign
    Era beginning/end

Celesta's Reign was the seventh age of Ardyn.   Marked by the defeat of Archmage Vecruth, Celesta was crowned Empress over the Exalted Expanse and her influence spanned the globe. Her reign is most noted for her implementation of the Cleansing; a ban on arcane magic practices on the Exalted Expanse in response to the events of the Morning War. While much of her reign was peaceful; threats of civil war in her empire constantly loomed and an invasion from the swelling Adamant Ascendancy loomed over her lands like a shadow.   The age ended with the forces of the Celestan Empire lending their aid to overthrow the Adamant Ascendancy and beat back a near-catastrophic coup attempt by sycophantic members of the Purgers.   It was during this time that the Lysteri resurfaced on Ardyn--for the first time since the Scourging--in the form of a woman named Mokuyo; who, after toppling the Adamantine Archon, reformed the goblin nations of the Ascendancy and turned them into the Adamant Alliance.   Celesta's Reign lasted 124 years and most continents outside the Exalted Expanse benefitted from a relative peace during these years.

    The Cleansing

Seeing first hand the devastation that arcane magic was able to inflict upon The Exalted Expanse and it's people, Empress Celesta decreed a 100 year cleansing of arcane magic from her lands in an effort to safeguard the citizens and ensure that no mortal would once again test the limits placed upon them by their divine creators.    Celesta began forming a group of mage hunters known as Purgers who had full authority to execute any remnant followers of Archmage Vecruth and to banish or arrest those found practicing arcane magic. While there was great resistance at first, the Purgers proved to be incredibly skilled at their task and arcane magic was soon almost entirely wiped off the continent within a few years. The people of The Exalted Expanse have adjusted to the change and now view any arcane magic with unease and distrust but there are those who remain that still practice the old ways and wish to overthrow this rule that they view as oppressive.
