Lord of Hosts

A pontiff of the Host of Hosts, the Lord of Hosts was created during the Southern Rebellion, in which the Southern Cantons of Milos (Bastis, Urudun, Revellia, and Ethel) rose up against the Northern Cantons: Kingsrift and Yvruel (now the Yfri Fields). The Rebellion failed, but it did result in a large part of Yvruel being carved off to create the Host Lands, a holy land for Milosian Host Keepers.   The Lord of Hosts is the head of the Host Keeping faith in Milos, an office distinct from the Monosi Prince of Hosts. The Lord of Hosts convenes with clerics and hostesses to interpret holy tradition, and issues edicts that all Host Keepers are expected to obey. While the office is distinct from the Monosi Prince of Hosts, many Lords of Hosts have deferred to the Monosi pontiff, and indeed many few the Lord of Hosts as a subservient figurehead (especially in the Northern Cantons).   The Lord of Hosts is elected by vote "from the seven greatest landowners in the Peninsula." This means the rulers of the six cantons, as well as the Church itself in the Host Lands, each have a vote, and the vote must be unanimous. The Lord of Hosts invariable comes from either Kingsrift or the Host Lands themselves, and as such very few Southern lords have any familiarity with each candidate. This means that Southern lords often defer their votes, leaving selection in the hands of the lords of Kingsrift, the Host Lands, and the Yfri Fields.   Upon election, the Lord of Hosts divorces himself from his clan and assumes a new title, typically named after some virtue he hopes to possess (or believes he already possesses). The current Lord of Hosts, for example, is called Vrydian the Constant.
