The Battle of Purecross.

The Purecross Waystation at the very top of the continent was once the sight of a bloody battle. Purecross was and still is the main way of traveling between the Aswarian Empire and the Theocracy of Formene. At the time of this battle, the lands which now make up Formene were called Ayrith. And they were embroiled in a conflict over the capital city Ernesh. The dragons who ruled the land fell out and were waging war to try and settle who was truly in charge. When the people fled they met with resistance at what is now known as Purecross.

The Conflict

Prelude

The Ayrithian Empire was booming. The dragons ruled kindly but fairly. However, they began to distrust one another and petty arguments arose. Soon the dragons were claiming territories and calling citizens to their aid. The dragons started having small fights when they met and their breath weapons damaged whatever they struck. Losing a fight made the dragon more angry and as the dragons became angrier they grew meaner. Soon they were fighting almost daily and the people were taking sides. Battles raged over the land. One particularly vicious and bloody battle happened in and above the Flatholde Forest. Multitudes died and the forest was burned to the ground. The gods were dismayed and realised that no-one was ceding any ground nor likely to be the first to say enough. Through their devoted followers the gods spread warnings through the lands that the battles should cease or they would be ceased. A few people listened but the war raged on. So the gods sent word that the people should flee as the dragons had become proud and refused to listen. Many displaced groups of people from various settlements took their meagre belongings then fled as they heard the words and knew trouble was coming. Some took off to the Eastern coast and ended up in the Ellon area, others took off to the West to the Aswarian Empire as they believed their neighbours would shelter and feed and take pity upon them.

Deployment

When King Gustav the First heard of the refugees starting to arrive in his lands, he was concerned. His advisors did not believe in gods interfering in the lives of the people so convinced the King it was a ruse. That it was an invasion of warriors in disguise. The King ordered his General to take the troops to protect the lands.

Battlefield

The two sides met where Purecross Waystation is now situated.

Outcome

The killing ceased. A tent city was erected. People were starving but the nearby towns provided some food and seeds.

Aftermath

The two companies settled in the crossing and established a kind of outpost and eventually built the Purecross Waystation. Now they have formed their own neutral group that provides refuge but also screens travelers and keeps a written record of all who pass.

Historical Significance

In Literature

A novella called "Here comes the Generals" was written about the forbidden love of the two generals and how that saved their peoples.
