The Calendar of Arceiron

The Calendar of Arceiron is the calendar used across most of Arceiron. It was created by the wizard Cerapis of Phandorra, so most people associate the word "Cerapis" with the calendar instead of the person.

Time and the Calendar

The Day

A day on Arceiron is made up of 24 sixty-minute hours.   Time is tracked throughout the day using a combination of sun-positioning, stable candles, water clocks and multiple supernatural or magical means.   Mechanical clocks and watches exist within Arceiron (especially in the city state of Revoltica), but are incdredibly rare and expensive.   In most civilized settlements the passage of time is marked on the hour by the ringing of a bell in the temple or town hall. Many settlements also have one or more sundials, which can give citizens more accurate time measurements.

The Week

A week in the Calendar of Cerapis is made up of seven days, named Sunday, Moonday, Kingsday, Midday, Wageday, Freeday, Godsday.

Sunday

The first day of the week is devoted to the sun goddess Vita as she blesses the mortal races once more with her life-granting light for another week.

Moonday

The second day of the week is devoted to the night and the moon, the goddesses Nyx and Selûne, in hopes that the dark things and the magic within the world will spare then mortal races for another week.   This is a common day for magical rituals to take place, as the connection to the moon and the darkness of night is said to improve the magical powers in the air.

Kingsday

This day is devoted to aristocracy and nobles in many civilized nations. Often kings and other rulers receive petitioners, diplomats and other envoys on this day.

Midday

This day marks the middle of the week.

Wageday

On this day of the week, most working folk are paid their weekly wages.   Most common folk earn between 1 and 2 silver coins per day, meaning their weekly wage is somewhere between 7 and 14 silver coins. This has to be accounted against their monthly lifestyle expenses, like rent for their homes, as well as taxes and the cost of upkeep for their belongings. As a result, most common people make a monthly profit of 2 to 4 silver coins they can put towards their savings. (See Lifestyles for a more detailed breakdown of this.)

Freeday

On this day many members of the working class have their day off, allowing them to visit taverns, pubs, brothels and other places where they can happily spend their freshly earned wages.

Godsday

This is the holiest weekday for most people and faiths in Arceiron. This day is devoted to the worship of the gods and almost all temples hold great sermons on this day. Most shops and public buildings are closed on Godsdays and especially pious nations even stop fighting during wars on a Godsday.
