Rage of Dragons
Once dragons as a race had established themselves, the various religious factions of dragons began to battle one another over their different ideologies.
The Rage of Dragons was a conflict between the draconic followers of Bahamut and Tiamat. In some respects the conflict never ended.
Tiamat was trying to slay her brother and absorb his divinity to eventually ascend from a lesser deity to something greater. She unleashed all sorts of dragonlike beings during the war, breeding warped creatures from her eggs. These entities became known as the Spawn of Tiamat.
To combat Tiamat's aberrant creations, Bahamut created powerful draconic humanoids known as the dragonborn of Bahamut, who served as his emissaries in the mortal realm during the first years of the war.
After losing most of her powers, Tiamat got demoted to an archfiend and banished to The Nine Hells.
