Dwarves

Dwarves live in the north-eastern mountain ranges of Kaeoma. They are the second most magically proficient race in Arcasai after Elves.

History

Dwarves were originally neo-humans that migrated from the West eons ago. The influence of magic in the mountains they inhabited caused them to grow stocky and short. However, it also made them increasingly proficient with magic.   Within the mountain range they inhabit, there are three different dwarven clans. The ones in the north are the strongest and most aggressive, and the southern dwarves are the smallest clan but are very amiable by dwarven standards.

Traits

Tunnel Dwellers

Dwarves rarely venture out of their mines due to agoraphobia, most likely a genetic trait. However, there have been particular individuals that find the urge to travel and explore far reaches of Arcasai. Those individuals are often viewed as eccentric.

Stone-Hearted

Dwarves are typically more logical than emotional, and this can sometimes lead to them appearing standoffish or even rude to other races. However, this makes them far more honest and trustworthy allies. Respect from dwarves is earned by being straighforward.   Dwarves also value bravery and even headstrong mannerisms, and hence foreign relations have always been tense. Dwarven relations with Elves are particularly so, as they are near complete opposites of dwarves, with their flippant demeanours and empathetic personalities. Elves are commonly described as "soft" by dwarves.

Gilded Gullets

Even though dwarves are the richest race, their thirst for riches is unquenchable, driving them deeper and even beyond their mountain homes. Most dwarves that do travel are merchants and traders of dwarven wares.   Dwarven merchants are stingy with their money and increase the price of items to seemingly ridiculous levels. However, they pride themselves in quality, so the price is usually worth it. Selling items to dwarven merchants is difficult, since they are very scrutinous and buy low.

Talented and Dedicated

Dwarves don't just hoard their riches in safes; they display it. Because they have access to the precious materials of the earth, dwarves have become accustomed to a gilded lifestyle. Their mountainous homes allow for grand structures of stone and precious metals, even structural pillars are works of art.   Dwarves value craftsmanship and detail over all else, committing their lives to perfecting the craft they have chosen for life. Dwarves are persistent and dedicated to mastering their profession.

Unique Traits

Meridi/Daes Dwarves

Despite still living in mountains, southern dwarves are referred to as "Hill dwarves" as a derogatory term by their northern cousins. This is because the southern mountains are the shortest in the north eastern ranges. As such, hill dwarves prefer the company of other races instead of their own.   This position is also beneficial however. As the closest dwarves to the Forested Isle, the Southern Dwarves are the most proficient with magic. Their enchanting skills are unparalleled among the dwarves, causing jealousy.
