Shimmer Touched and What it means to be it

Shimmer Touched or Shimmer Tainted is the official term used in Silent Frontiers to describe the phenomena in which a person who, while not under the full permanent effects of Shimmer, has come into contact with enough of it for it to "taint" their system; leaving non-permanent effects and characteristics on the body.   While not specifically called "Shimmer Touch/Tainted" within the show, we have seen this happen in the show a few times, with one of the most memorable being Sevika pumping Shimmer in her body through the tubes on her arm during her fight with Vi, effectively using it as a fuel source to power it in battle.

And as seen with this temporary "boost" method, Shimmer is highly potent even in small amounts and that really hasn't changed much in Silent Frontiers.   Shimmer in Silent Frontiers is still remains a very potent yet mysterious drug found within the Zone, but its origins are a little different compared to how they were in the show.   In Arcane, Shimmer was originally created by Singed from a species of glowing purple flowers that he found in the caves of Zaun.   In Silent Frontiers however, Shimmer's exact origins remain much of a mystery, but it presents itself instead as a bi-product found within the numerous Bile-Ducts and tumors that can be found on one particular Mutated Aberration and one particular Mutated Aberration only.   Outside of this change in origin however, not much separates Shimmer from its Origin Counterpart (LoL/Arcane Shimmer). It is potent, but compared to its Origin counterpart, it is also highly rare. So rare in fact that the black-market value for Shimmer makes it one of the most expensive materials one can find within the Zone to either buy or sell.   At least while in its pure form.   Within the zone, there are actually two variants of Shimmer that can be discovered.   Artificially Manufactured Shimmer, often known by the street name "Dreamer", is an artificial variant of Shimmer that is common within the Zone. Developed as a way to cope with the rarity and cost of Pure Shimmer, Dreamer is not nearly as powerful as its counterpart and doesn't not offer even a quarter of the potency unless laced. In fact, compared to its "pure" form, you're less likely to experience half of ANY of the negative side-effects that entail with it.   It's because of this, that Dreamer often equates its potency and side-effects similar to that of a advanced form of Morphine. Over the short years, large, new batches of Dreamer have flooded the market since its discovery, becoming a staple recreational and oftentimes medicinal drug throughout the Zone and surrounding area; becoming common place in the inventory of many merchants, venders and settlement's.   Numerous enterprising cooks over the years have also developed their own unique versions of the drug by mixing the artificial version with additional chemicals or substances. In fact it's so common place that it is not unheard of certain sections of the Zone concocting their own variant of what is known as Zaunite Laudan, "Calmit" or "Smooch", the later name thought to be a play on the word "Comet"; given that much like Pure Shimmer, manufactured shimmer still produces a bright almost "Shooting-star" like shine to it due to various chemical reactions as well as a calming "relaxing" feel.   The most popular form of this is Smooch. Smooch is often produced similarly much like how old-style laudanum once was hence the name Laudan; consisting sometimes normally of 10% powdered Dreamer (the equivalent of 1% morphine) by weight mixed with often high-proof Alcohol. The content and type of which varies substantially between Zone's, and most Barons will often make their own style with whatever alcohol or such is on hand. Some even tend to be so protective over their recipes that it's rumored one even resorts to incredible acts of violence in order to protect their secrets, going to great lengths unheard of from even other Barons...   Despite many considering Dreamer to be the safer option for many since the effects of Dreamer aren't nearly as extreme as Pure Shimmer as long as no additives are included in its creation, many people still tend to shy away and often equate the two as the same.   As a result of this, many bar's that try to go "Shimmer free" don't tend to sell Smooch or any of the variants produced throughout the waste's and many merchants will often refuse to even do business with anyone in possession of it. With this leading to something similar to a prohibition Bootlegging ring; where many criminals and dealers will sell to anyone that is interested in buying their product.   Standard Shimmer or Pure Shimmer in Silent Frontiers however is a highly addictive substance, often inducing psychological and physical reliance in a short period of time compared to other drugs found throughout the various regions of the Zone. In small quantities, Standard Shimmer is said to accelerate the healing process and enhance the user's physical constitution.   In larger quantities however, as seen in the show, a plethora of side-effects often tail close behind and as a result for many, the risks outweigh the benefit and as a result it is not used much in medical practices in any location within the Zone's. This is because Shimmer in Silent Frontiers in its purest form is an extremely potent liquid and its potency is often rumored to be so great that even just the action of accidentally slathering it on the skin is rumored enough to stimulate its effects. Accidental overdoses as a result have tragically occurred this way as a result given the highly concentrated nature of the solution.   However similar to the Show, Artificial and Pure are not the only forms of Shimmer confirmed to be out there in Silent Frontiers. There are actually multiple variants of Pure Shimmer rumored to have existed in Silent Frontiers, though all but one of them are never actually discussed about and used. The one variant used and discussed is actually special compared to most, designed specifically by Singed.   While the exact properties of it are unknown as it was only used once and once alone, judging by certain circumstances, one can make up a series of variable conclusions regarding it's make up.   But the most important is: Whatever this new Variant was, it seemingly had lost it addictiveness which remained almost non-existent, while also keeping with it the properties of the original Shimmer. While it is unclear exactly as to what Singed had done to this new variant in order to make it do this, what we do know is that it still seems to be derivative of the Base Compounds of Shimmer.   As stated before, to be classified as Shimmer Touched or Shimmer Tainted in the world of Silent Frontiers, one of the most obvious things is one has come into contact with enough Pure Shimmer for it to "taint" their system. This is because Artificial Shimmer does not contain the same properties as Pure Shimmer. The physical changes that often occur in Pure do not present in Artificial, meaning that you can drink it to your hearts content (PLEASEDONT) and not present with any of the tell-signs, such as an increase in strength or a change in the color of your eyes. Making it really essentially just a new form of potent Liquid Morphine that came in a pretty color.
The new variant Singed had created however, did just that.
Soaking into the skin or getting it in the eyes oral/nasal cavities often proved successful in transferring the substance into a persons system. The result of such showing as non-permanent effects and characteristics on the body that generally depleted as time went on.
Which is exactly what happened to both Jinx and Ekko, shortly after Isha's Death. . .

Because Ekko and Jinx got covered in Isha’s blood from that entire experience with Singed, they basically second-handed the Shimmer Singed was pumping through Isha's system in order to keep her alive. As a result of this, both Ekko and Jinx became Shimmer Tainted.   However   While they both suffered from the affects of the Shimmer, both Ekko and Jinx did not suffer from the addictive qualities. Instead both Jinx and Ekko suffered from Physical changes. Jinx’s eyes as we all know went from Blue to Pink and she also garnered a pretty "healthy" boost in strength and endurance.   Except this time so did Ekko as well.   Ekko’s eyes went from Hazel-Brown to Green. However compared to Jinx's eyes, Ekko’s shimmer was even much more vibrant and brighter than Jinx’s because he spent a much longer time trying to revive Isha out of guilt.   But not only that he’s boy savior it’s his job to fix things he could fix this. . .he could fix this. . .   So he just kept going. Long after Jinx had ultimately given up. Long enough for even the fatigue eating at his bones to actually out pace the Shimmer in his veins. However long that was no one knows for certain. But it was long enough, because when they finally found him….when they found them, Jinx’s eyes were only a fraction of that godforsaken pink color   But Ekko’s was ever still so vibrant.   Loosing Isha had sucked hard for both Ekko and Jinx. Both had mourned in different yet albeit similar ways and used each other to cope with the loss. Jinx, similar to how it was in the show, ended up having a major and drastic depressive episode that left her despondent for quite a while, the period of mourning great and equally terrible.   Ekko surprisingly had something almost similar to that, but his was much more “tragically tame” compared to hers, with less focus on himself and more focus toward Jinx and her well being. For weeks at a time, while Ekko and Jinx both basically shut themselves off from the world; rarely ever leaving their hideout and even their bed for almost days at a time.   Each trying to cope and forget   But they always had reminders   The Shimmer was stubborn after all. Even in the weeks time they spent cooped up together alone, it still held on tightly and never fully cleared their systems until much longer later on down the line.   Always lingered   Always there seemingly to remind them of what they had lost. . .what they failed to save. .   Especially Ekko, who often spent hours at a time in the bathroom poking and prodding around his eyes when he would notice how bright they glowed. . . and remembered why exactly they glowed at all in the first place.   The Shimmer forced them to wear their sins. To bear their sins cardinal weight to world. Forced to see them in each and every reflective surface. The windows of their souls. The beginnings of seeing their inner selves.   Tinted by bright pink and even brighter green failure.
