Archer Profession in Arcane Realm | World Anvil

Archer

Archers are a class of foot soldiers trained in using bows and arrows to launch assaults on their foes at a range. Historically, archers have been used for hunting and combat. In more recent times, archery has moved closer in the domains of recreation and competitive sport but there are many individuals and groups who are making efforts to preserve the skill in its original avenues as well.

Perception

Purpose

Archers provide long range damage that the enemy usually is unable to directly counterattack.

Operations

Tools

The main tool of an archer's arsenal is of course, the bow and arrow. While there is much variety in the construction of bows (both historic and modern), all bows consist of a string attached to elastic limbs that store energy imparted by the user drawing the string. There are bows that draw when directly pulled or those that use a mechanism instead, variations which can change an archer's tactics.    A common mechanically drawn bow is the crossbow, which requires a different mind and skillset than the traditional bow.

Materials

The most important supply for an archer is likely the arrow the main ammunition for their bow.    Archers have also adopted protective equipment over the years such a bracer to protect the inside of the bow arm from being hit by the string and prevent their clothes from catching the bowstring. Some archers will wear chest guards, something often worn by female humanoid archers. Fingers used for drawing the bow can be protected by a leather tab, glove, or thumb ring. Some of this equipment maybe ornamented in cultures where archery has a great significance.

Dangers & Hazards

The main drawback of being an archer in combat has to do with postition. The time is takes to prepare a bow to fire (drawing, lining up sight, etc.) means that foes with melee weaponry can easily take advantage to strike back before an archer can. This means that archers should not be in the first offensive line, as they have trouble counterattacking close-range hits if they don't have their own melee to the side.
