Foreword
As Writers, World-Builders, Word-Smiths, Game-Masters, and Story-Tellers, I think we can all agree on one thing: we love a good Story. We love when the writer is passionate about what they're doing, as it reflects in their work. What does it take to make excellent craft- to build passionate Worlds and settings?
World Anvil is an excellent platform for young Writers seeking to build their talent. Beyond the many versatile tools and CSS tricks, World Anvil is committed to innovating its' platform and providing an excellent user-experience. I can't think of any better application of their abilities than World-Building Convention!
What is the World Building Convention?
In March, World Anvil is host of the annual WA World-Building Convention! Each year, they create a 2-day Live-Stream event for not only members of World Anvil, but for anyone and everyone around the World! Panelists and speakers gather together on the subject of World-Building. By answering and interacting with questions, we're able to learn from their unique perspectives. Whether your ambition is casual or professional, there is immense value in attending these engaging seminars! Last year, I kept hand-written notes from 2024 WB-Con, sharing them with my friends and other writers of World Anvil. They found these insights to be helpful. This year, I wanted to share these notes with others! Included in this Article are this year's hand-written notes; as such, they're not a verbatim account of the event. For accuracy, I implore you to take the opportunity to fully enjoy these through the videos provided!

Founder's Chat is the Day 2 opening seminar for the convention; a retrospective look at World Anvil's History from the perspective of Founders, Janet Forbes & Dimitris R Havlidis.In presenting this coverage of the convention, I thought it was appropriate to begin with the History, as presented in the Timeline, to the best of my ability. I may not have caught every single detail, but I hope this provides an idea of scope of their years of amazing service.

Afterword

- Players can do anything. Consider foundational building blocks, such as Characters and Factions. Those who have the most pull on the World can be built around.
- Sometimes power unintended requires the specificity of circumstance.

- Choose arc moments when introducing agency. Critical moments through powder keg world-building.
- When there's a change, there's a vaccum.
- Characters evolve- so do the villains. Those villains see the Characters in the World and react.
- Make sure character motivations are flexible. Make it a comedy until it isn't!

- Dialogue, as a source of exchange and information. Writing effective dialogue conveys meaning and exposition organically.
- Character first- will often change the World in ways you can't anticipate.
- People come together in her setting. Social bonds help to leverage each other's strengths.
- Remind your audience of the ordinary people, as grounding characters.
Ed Greenwood

- Writing by Committee. How do you handle overpowered Characters? Writing scenes or encounters, the uninvolved are motivated. This will determine their behavior.
- Be mindful of communication in your setting. Communication should be slow and lousy. Everything is retold by unreliable narrators.
- The World fills a vacuum. Power ramps into a scene of interest; thus, power leveling scales. Overpowered characters are less interesting.

- Worlds and stories are enormous. The World is the World of our story. This World can be anything from a small village to epic scale. This scale can vary wildly.
- Starts with the villains. Characters with Hi-Agency are encountered with powerful villains; think they're right.

- You can tell what people appreciate in society by how they treat each other.
- Wrote her space station as organic structures. She considered Life cycles; what part of the space station would have to focus on certain tasks, problems. Focused on critical areas.
- A city evolves to address issues. Told a fascinating story about a road, a bridge, and the need to address truck overhead clearance in her own city.
- What we've allowed to die is as vital as what flourishes as a marker of history.

- Answer questions with your city building, such as who and what Cultures or sub-Cultures exist. How/why would people live there?
- It's easy to think in a top-down perspective when city building. Consider alternate perspectives.
- Location is important advantageously; determines population. Culture creates how they live there.
- Excavation leads to layer of history. Consider Car Architecture; analogues of priority are build and re-build.
- What do people find remarkable in the city? What do natives remark upon? Helps establish Cultural background.

- Cities aren't perfectly planned at first. Each city squats on the previous iterations of earlier city plans; central planning doesn't happen perfectly.
- People inhabit the stones. It shouldn't feel like it rolls up and floats away; it should feel lived in.
- Central planning can be applied to historical cities. Order can be imposed upon chaos. Original purpose lingers in the ghosts of expansion.
- There is a struggle of identity when establishing Culture in cities. Accidents of circumstance allow us to work with what we have.

- Learn "PUNC" method. Passion. Urgency. Novelty. Competition.
- Pattern recognition is a great talent. An ability to see relations is important and learning this is a powerful process; connecting ideas, associating and intuiting information are useful World-Building skills!
- Focus: Don't try to force anything! Sustain your focus and write.
- Kat sees things in webs of inter-connectedness, the relationship between things that aren't instantly obvious. Mind-mapping is effective!

- The importance of reference documents is often overlooked. There are different approaches between the work and being a Game-Master. The World is a complex node. Having references is helpful.
- Peter had to choose what was most valuable to him in World-Building. You don't need to know everything, but document everything.
- Curiosity World-Building. 1: You build up a library of experiences. 2: Gain and discard ideas. It's a struggle to do everything so pick what matters. You can't meet all expectations.

- Gathered heaps of info before mapping the setting. In his work with teams, he found the details important to convey between writers. Pick and choose the vital details.
- When building Cultures, build differences with the species and import it into the rules (of a TTRPG). Be unconventional in the approach; not a tired, true method.
- Expanding, picking and choosing an experience that lets the Reader interact with what they choose is a Journey.

- Strive for what is real, obtainable. Verisimilitude is important feeling to establish.

- Even when handling dark subjects, make it cozy! Themes include reassurance, community-support, and security.
- Something to develop in the writing is a sense of intimacy. It helps to build on the interpersonal relationships.
- Seek to reimagine the mundane- Magic is in everything! How that shows depends on the Magic.
- Think about what is cozy. There's much humor and light-heartedness in these settings. An old lady traps death in a vacuum.

- Provide comfort with the writing. There is Hope. Cozy isn't alone. There are extremes in this genre.
- You don't have to lean on central tropes of Cozy Fantasy.
- Magic makes you feel changed. Like the World is made of Magic.

- Let names inspire World-Building elements.
- You can be somewhat unconventional.
- Few made-up words. Leans into the real world for meaning and interpretation.

- You don't have to explain it all! Leave some mystery for your Readers about names.
- Magical names can be based on what the magic is based on. Repurpose for familiarity.
- Continuity and context are important in naming convention. World-first consistency brings logical processing into the setting.

- What they believe will affect their Culture and how they interact with each other; layers of complexity in how people relate with the Divine.
