In an Icy Marsh
In an Icy Marsh
Tundra Bottan is a significant fauna that grows in both the Minas & Majas Polar regions. It is considered the oldest species of complex flora in Pathon. While this plant only grows mildly in the Northern Minas Polas region, the larger lowlands and coastal areas of the Southern Hemisphere's Majas Polas makes this plant fairly common.
It is used for many products, including cloth, sturdy wood & poles, and construction materials. As bedding or padding, it provides a layer of protection against cold exposure.

The most remarkable property of this plant is the ability to produce a large quantity of dense, fluffy soft down. Cottony cloth extends from the top of the plant, spreading out to capture moisture from falling snow. This cloth runs through the interior of the Tundra Bottan's length, down to its root system. The exterior of the plant is covered in thick plates of bark. Planks from Bottan Pole are thin, but they make great water-resistant scaffolds and are found in the construction of land and sea-faring vessels, such as the Bede Sled or Broamede
Origin & Cultivation
Tundra Bottan is the ancestor of all Bottan tree species, originating in the cold climates of the harsh Ice Age. Rings of these trees grew along the edges of volcanic vents and marshes with geothermal vents. Filtering nutrients from the volcanic soil, plants could grow as high as 15 Un. Using a system of water collection, cottony fluff captured water, sending it directly to the root system. The insulated system kept the water from freezing inside, making it a hardy and frost-resistant flora. Once cut, it also served as an emergency source of fresh water.
Tundra Bottan would eventually travel across the continent of Mystomythia, finding itself in warm and cold regions alike. Finding Bottan trees often saved winter travelers.
First, the plant was chopped at the base of the stalk, where water was held. Once drained, it was splintered with an axe or stone. The wood was broken open, the contents dried. Plant fibers could then be bundled using a primitive loom.

History & Significance
The first culture to cultivate and distribute Tundra Bottan was the Myst & Myth Folk. Among the oldest known plants in Pathon’s history, Tundra Bottan was discovered by the Folk as they wandered the lands of forever frost. Its hardy nature and rapid propagation made it an invaluable resource, shaping the foundation of early agriculture.
Before the discovery of Icing Silk, Tundra Bottan was a dependable material for clothing, shelter, and tools. Its fibrous interior, when woven together, provided insulation against the brutal cold, while its thin wooden exterior offered fuel for warmth. Over time, the Folk developed specialized tools, such as sickles for fibrous cloth and scythes for the plant’s resilient wood, laying the groundwork for organized harvesting and the first rudimentary farming settlements.

Purple Tundra Bottan flourished in the most frigid regions of the world, its deep-hued fibers rumored to have unique properties, including superior insulation and arcane frost resistance. However, it mysteriously changed during the Thunder Age, marking one of the earliest recorded mutations tied to climate shifts and cultural expansion.
As the Folk formed the nation of Mystomythia, they carried Tundra Bottan with them, seeding it in regions where the climate allowed. Over centuries, different strains of Bottan adapted to diverse environments, giving rise to regional varieties; some prized for their durability, others for their mystical properties. Remnants of these ancient crops persist in colder regions as white flowering stalks.

Myth & Cultural Relevance
Bottiban of the Groves
Traveling through groves of Tundra Bottan were often dangerous due to the presence of capricious spirits, the Bottiban. These creatures floated through the groves, able to drop ice and snow on any who trespassed into their realm. It was believed that the Bottiban were connected to specific trees and removing the tree would destroy the spirit.
While Bottiban were defensive, they could be reasoned with. There are many stories of Folk and Buniru who have paid tribute to cross Bottiban territory.
Aelves were able to build a relationship with Bottiban, employing them as guardians and caretakers of their groves.

Measurements
"Units" are measurements, defined by length, width, and weight. A whole Unit is denoted with an "Un" and represents 1 whole measured "Unit" (equivalent to the average length of a forearm). A "Micro-Unit" is denoted with a "Um" in measurements and is the size of an index finger bone. 10 Micro-Units make 1 Un. To measure weight, Unit Burden is calculated relative to the weight of an adult fist. Total Units are measured using decimals.
