Icing Silk

... the chilly Spider's-String makes stylish clothes for squalls and snow!

Icing Silk is the by-product of a fierce predator of cold regions- the Icing Orb-Weaver Spider. This creature dominates the Majas Polas lowland regions, even to this day. Able to quickly produce webbing, it can be coaxed to yield this sticky silk.

The process of cultivating the Icing Orb Weaver's silk is a Folk tradition. Icing Orb-Weavers shoot snowy spheres to immobilize prey.

Bolt of Icing Silk

While difficult to obtain, one bolt of Icing Silk can make rope, clothes, and bedding for a small village. Cold and water resistant, these threads were the epitome of fashionably cool.
This fantastic thread binds to the Cold, creating a sticky layer of cloth and protection against glacial environments. To retain its composition and structure, Liquid Ice is added, creating an incredibly resistant material.

Bolts of Icing Silk can be fashioned into Chillweave imbuements; with proper enchantment, a bolt can enchant arms and armor, or it can create special tools for cold and wet environments.

Groups of these spiders hunt together, in groups of two to five. Swarms are common, as are Giant species.

Taxonomy

Source: Cold
Mode: Terran
Phylum: Arthropoda
Diet: Sanguinous
Class: Arachniad
Order: Ricinulei
Type: Insectoid
Genus: Cryptospyths
S. Classification: C. cryonihla
Insectoid (Arachnoid)/ Venomous
  • Natural Predators: Avians

A blood-sucking Arachnid that preys upon warm-blooded mammals, Aquans, Avians, and other Insectoids. It isn't afraid to attack things larger than it if it feels threatened, and its bite causes intense frostbite- even without poison. It is sparing with its venom, but if it decides to inject even a small amount, an adult Human can lose all feeling in that local member, as if it were subjected to severe cold exposure. Blood freezing and congealing can occur as flow to the appendages is severed with a numbing bite.
These spiders were once classified incorrectly as Araneidae Order of Spiders, due to its association with orbs and snow-balls. The spinnerets are located within specialized pincers, allowing it to launch magical cold-infused snowballs at targets. This special snow-ball is sticky and can spread the Icing Orb-Weaver's webbing. Mistranslations of its name attributed it to multiple spiders, but it is among the most ancient spiders, appearing during the early Ice Age.

Origin & Cultivation

First, the Icing Spider's String is harvested. There are a couple of different means of doing this; a few are non-volatile for the spider and the collector. One must be careful, as foraging the threads from the spinnerets is a delicate process.

  • Harvesting the Icing Orb-Weaver
    • Dead Icing Orb-Weavers may contain silk if they are undamaged. This is collected both through the glands that produce the Spider-String and the pincers that house the spinnerets on the back legs.
  • Catching a "Snow-Ball"
    • Icing Orb-Weavers notoriously chase away larger prey with snow-balls. Catching a snow-ball is a great way of collecting Icing Spider-String.
  • Discover a Spider-Silk Cache
    • This Spider has the instincts of a Trap-Door Spider, therefore, finding a nest or webbing is a sure-fire way of collecting more Spider-String.

Synthesizing Icing Silk

To produce Icing Silk, a container or vessel is filled with magical "Ice"(any color variation: Blue, Pink, or Black Ice). Using different kinds of Ice only changes the color outcome. Otherwise, these other forms of Ice provide the same product despite their individual properties. A similar process is used in the creation of other types of Magic Silk.
Once the vessel's bulb fills with Ice, a spool of Icing Spider String is threaded through a cork in the lid, with water dripped down the string fed into the container. After 45–60 minutes, the Icing Silk forms and the spool is retrieved. The now-brittle container is broken to extract the Icing Silk, which is essential for crafting a Chillweave bolt.

Historical Significance

Myth & Myst Folk were the first to discover the process for creating products from Icing Silk and Chillweave bindings. They developed the first means to extract and create the bolts needed to fashion new clothing. Icing Silk Robes were a common attire for many Folk, especially children, who would receive a swaddling cloth of Icing Silk upon their birth. The Mariners of the Folk often tied their clothing in Icing Silk sashes, or they'd keep bundles of Icing Silk, which wouldn't freeze in the open ocean air.
Aelves later learned this practice also, but they preferred long Icing Silk Cloaks. Icing Silk Robes were seen as a luxury item, used in Thermal Baths, or as status fashion, usually worn by their Diviners or Shamans.

Buniru would also adapt this practice, but only after thousands of years of scavenging the fabric for themselves. Aelves and Folk often employed Buniru into dangerous situations to retrieve bundles of Icing Silk, later developing their own fashions.

Myth & Cultural Relevance

Folk Flags and Clan Crests

One of the most important developments from Icing Silk related to language. While it began as basic script using Myst Folk numerology and Myth Folk alphabet, the process of embroidering symbols bridged their cultural vocabularies. Tribal Flags and woven cloth patches often held a powerful word or Folk phrase.
Clan Crests began to emerge, identifying members of specific Clans and status within that clan. These distinctions in clothing provided roles for Clan members. The colors and patterns also reflected which Tribe they came from- Blue was for Myst Folk where Pink belonged to Myth Folk.

Folk Crests

Both cultures shared neutral colors in their designs, such as black, white, or gold. Flags that carry both colors represented united Tribes of Folk, as seen with the allied nation of Mystomythia. Warring Tribes added red into these combined designs.

Measurements
"Units" are measurements, defined by length, width, and weight. A whole Unit is denoted with an "Un" and represents 1 whole measured "Unit" (equivalent to the average length of a forearm). A "Micro-Unit" is denoted with a "Um" in measurements and is the size of an index finger bone. 10 Micro-Units make 1 Un. To measure weight, Unit Burden is calculated relative to the weight of an adult fist. Total Units are measured using decimals.

Author's Notes

**Update: 01/30/25 **

This Article just recently received a little love! I'm going through all of my Articles from the Ice Age, getting them to a point of standard! This Article was a part of the work I did for Cabinet of Curiousities in 2024! This sticky silk offers specialized protection against the cold and adheres to the form that wears it, making each piece of cloth a special fit! I can imagine the early Cultures wearing silk in the snow- it creates this kind of image quality in my mind, of elegance and resilience! As the project is in constant movement, I'll be adding to this Article in the future!
