Snow Globe

... captured snow within a globe's glassy confines reveals hidden objects within!

"Finding a Snow Globe is a fortuitous discovery! Mythologists and relic hunters often find more treasure than they initially expected. All by peering into a surface made of snow!"
Expert Dungeoneer, Elsie Mylee Gates

A Snow Globe is an unusual relic from the Ice Age. Once commonly valued by the Myst & Myth Folk, it was abandoned when the Magic was used against the Tribes.

Snow Globes come in a few varieties, modified by size and appearance. Small Snow Globes are personal, while Medium Snow Globes offer volume and storage.

Pure Snow Globe

The original purpose was to provide shelter during storms or natural disasters. By placing one's hands upon its chilly surface, one's transported inside the orb.

Pure Snow Globes are bi-way; you can enter and exit the globe with Folk Magic. Dark Snow Globes are one-way portals. Escaping requires specific phrases and magical Attunement.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

This magical device contains a various volume range and weight capacity despite the globe's relative size. Ranges shown below are critical ranges:
  • Small Globe: 70ub- 100ub
  • Medium Globe: 700-1000 ub
* Once a Snow Globe reaches critical capacity, it fractures, and releases all contents from the shattered surface.

By using Folk Word, one invokes the special command, touches the sphere, and transports into the Globe. The owner appears from falling snow that continuously drifts within the icy sphere- though the inside remains an ambient cool temperature. Air passes through the Globe, unless it has been covered. Living things can survive within a Snow Globe.
Outside the Snow Globe, the owner may peer inside, focusing their intent on a specific area or contained object. Etched lines and carved snow forms on the surface, then reveals the owner's desired location within. Touching the image allows the owner to move an object within or draw the item out.

By touching someone else while touching the Snow Globe, each are transported, along with personal items, into the container. Many used these as portable refuges while others maintained vaults, now full of valuable Mythological artifacts and Ice Age relics.

As long as the weight capacity and critical range haven't been breached, it contains all valuables inside a frosty, magical shell.

Destroying A Snow Globe

While the Snow Globe can withstand pressure or being dropped, it can inevitably be shattered. Exposing the Snow Globe to flames or sources of intense heat will also cause the Snow Globe to burst and break, rather than melt. If enough damage occurs, fracturing lines appear along the surface, the globe will glow a pink, crimson color, light will spill from the inside, and all the contents burst through in a pile outside. As part of the process of dispelling a Snow Globe, the contents will appear next to it in a flash of crimson light. The remnant pieces of the Snow Globe evaporate in a puff of mist.

Construction & Production

To create a Snow Globe, one must collect a sufficient amount of Blue Ice and Pink Ice. Typically, these can be found together, but care must be taken in extracting and separating the two as Pink Ice is known for its temperament. Warm gloves will be required for those who lack a resistance to the cold. The Folk used a special hollow tube by running water through it. This ensures the Ice moves through the cylinder freely, sliding to a tapered end.
With a mouth full of cold water or snow, the Artisan sends Blue Ice through the tube, forming a bubble. An Enchanter's Sodor is used to inscribe the command words and spell matrix between layers of Ice. Sizing spells and enchantments are used to bind the spell matrix. The Artisan alternates between layers of Blue and Pink Ice, until the Snow Globe has reached a desired size. Once cast in water for several hours, the Snow Globe will be ready for use.

Historical Significance

The first Snow Globe was created by the Myth Folk. Their purpose for creating them was to offer different forms of containment, compared to common pots or urns. Using Dungeon relics, they made Snow Globes and distributed them amongst their Clans. As demand for Snow Globes increased, they also created the first Snow Domiciles.

These were larger structures designed not for portability but permanent shelter. Snow Domiciles were often simple structures with one-two rooms, and storage space.

Dome Settlement

Villages sprouted around these buildings, often used as communal halls or private residences. As shelters, they maintain a constant temperature and air flow.

Enter the Dark Globe

Dark Globes, are constructed with additional Black Ice. Much denser, heavier than a normal Snow Globe, these one way portals were used to contain others. Many traps and devices used these to capture prisoners. Forbidden Magic created Dark Globes, but their use became practical in Folk society.

"Units" are measurements, defined by length, width, and weight. A whole Unit is denoted with an "Un" and represents 1 whole measured "Unit" (equivalent to the average length of a forearm). A "Micro-Unit" is denoted with "Um" in measurements and is the size of an index finger bone. 10 Micro-Units make 1 Un. To measure weight, Unit Burden is calculated relative to the weight of an adult fist. Total Units are measured using decimals.
