Lifebeat Grenade Item in Arc Sagas | World Anvil

Lifebeat Grenade

"Medic! We need Healing, fast!"

"Grenade! Incoming!"
— a medic with a Lifebeat Grenade

A Lifebeat Grenade is a small metal cannister, connected with a pin and trigger. It is a splash weapon which is lobbed at wounded, to spread healing amongst a group.

Radiant Energy is diffused when the grenade combusts, spreading Radiant Life Source energy to each living thing in its area of effect.

While this item does provide healing, it can also be used to spread Radiant damage to Undead, or possibly cause Radiant Sickness, a terrible condition that occurs when one absorbs too much Radiant energy.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

A Lifebeat Grenade infuses any living thing within it's area of effect with Radiant Energy. Each Subject within the radius receives 5 temporary HP. Undead creatures within the blast zone take 5 HP Radiant Damage.

Those whose HP are restored over half of their maximum may be exposed to the Radiant Sickness condition.

The Lifebeat Grenade has an effective range of 30ft. A Grenade Launcher may double this range.

Manufacturing process

While it isn't manufactured anymore, the process for creating a Lifebeat Grenade takes approximately 1 hour. The metal casing and trigger are constructed first. The Caster spends time infusing the combustible powder with Radiant Source energy. Caution must be observed in this part of the process, as failure could result in the loss of materials or expose the artisan to Radiant energy. Once the powder is prepared, its poured into the metal casing, and finally fitted with the pin.

History

Lifebeat Grenades were originally designed to aid medics with quick alternatives to provide healing to many subjects at once. When it was proven effective as a means to administer quick First-Aid, the Lifebeat Grenade was quickly mass produced- until Radiant Sickness was discovered behind cruel and unusual methods of torture.

Since then, the Lifebeat Grenade is used only by special personnel on operations in militaries and against incursions of Undead. However, some "Underground" markets may still keep and manufacture these items.

Significance

The Lifebeat Grenade helped save many lives during paramount wars, but it was also the reason for death and misery. When it was discovered that malicious soldiers infected enemies with Radiant Sickness, the weapon was determined to be too dangerous as a medical device.

Since then, it has been placed upon the banned list as a weapon used in all but the most vicious wars.

Thematically I can see this being real cool. The ttrpg mentions did threw off the reading for me a bit, maybe consider separating it with the quote or tables. However really cool and would be very interested on knowing more about these and their history!

That's not a bad idea! Great idea, in fact, and I'm happy you mentioned it, ty! I'm developing this for 3 medias- novel series, a TTS I'm developing, and video game series. In the following months, I'll be looking for ways to make it easier for people to separate each as they explore the content, so that is a fantastic idea!

I feel that, it's the kind of information that makes sense to you the writer, but doesn't help with many others. Look forward to seeing more stuff!

Yes! I thought it was an interesting concept! Radiant Sickness, in itself, is a terrible condition, but hard to contract without actively exposing oneself to Radiant energy. Left alone, the energy diffuses, but if over-charged, the mutations that occur grow rampantly. It made me think that, as a tool, someone would find a use for it as a weapon, unfortunately.

As most inventions tend to do. eather they are initially for the military or will become military once someone thinks "hey hey yeah, but how good is it to hit someone?" P.S. I 'll showcase this little devices' article in my NYR-24 Challenge ;)
