Nagai Ogata

In Arbor, alchemists are usually renowned for their beneficial creations—potions, tinctures, and remedies. However, Nagai is infamous for a different reason: her creation of Bright, an exceedingly dangerous magical enhancement drug. Many would like to see Bright eradicated from Arbor and the wider world. Lesser known, however, are Nagai’s efforts to create safer versions of Bright that might benefit those without natural magical abilities. Driven by a desire to rectify her past mistake, Nagai strives to mitigate the harm caused by her creation, haunted by the consequences she sees every time another victim appears in the news.

Appearance:

Standing at 4 feet tall, Nagai is a goblinoid woman often seen carrying her entire laboratory on her back. This ensures she is always prepared to treat a case of Bright overdose. She has the classic green skin and long pointed ears of her race and is never without her glasses, which she relies on to see.

Personality:

Nagai is driven by the need to correct her past mistake. She believes she has caused more harm to Arbor and its people than any single individual in its long history. Haunted by the faces of Bright’s victims, she dedicates every waking moment to her mission. Despite her single-minded focus, she still helps those she encounters who have taken too much or have been unlucky with Bright.

Background:

Nagai was once a promising student of the Philosopher's Hand, excelling in the areas of refining and transmutation. Her teachers believed she might one day succeed the Guild's master. However, this was not to be. Her talent attracted the attention of a group known as the Dust Mites, who presented her with a puzzle: to make Dust into something useful. Naively trusting, Nagai eagerly took on the challenge, resulting in the creation of Bright. Initially, her trials showed no apparent side effects, but when production and sale began, and accidents occurred, her objections led to an attempt on her life. Surviving the attempt, she went into hiding, dedicating herself to researching and mitigating the effects of her creation.

Restitution:

Realizing that the Dust Mites  had hidden the disastrous failures from her, Nagai now spends every hour trying to find a safer version or a cure for Bright. Despite her efforts, she has yet to succeed.

Relationships:

Nagai has no time for personal relationships. Some old colleagues at the Philosopher's Hand may still offer her shelter on cold nights, but otherwise, she is alone in her crusade.

Allegiance:

Her only allegiance is to her mission of correcting her mistake and preventing further harm from Bright.
