Dora Maxwell

Few people would have thought that the mother of the Artifex would come from such humble beginnings, but true genius knows no bounds and is not the sole domain of the wealthy or privileged. Such as it was with Dora and even before becoming what she was she was a gifted prodigy of golemancy working for the The Ember Golem Core, she is also recognized for several innovations in the construction of golems that allowed them to become far more autonomous than they once were. If her life hadn't been cut short it's very likely she would have advanced her field to unknown heights and perhaps unlocked the secret of creating true life.
"Dora may have left this world too soon, but her legacy lives on through her golems. Her brilliance in golemancy was unmatched, and the autonomous creations she brought to life were nothing short of miraculous. It is a tragedy that she was not able to fully realize her potential, but her innovations will always be remembered and celebrated by those who have had the privilege of beholding her creations." -Professor Tobias Grey, a renowned golem historian and researcher

Appearance

Dora was a young woman, in her late 20s, with striking features and a sharp, intelligent gaze. She had a petite but curvaceous build, with a light complexion and dark hair that she often kept tucked behind her ears. She was always dressed in practical, comfortable clothes that allowed her to move freely while working on her golems. Her hands were calloused from years of working with metal and gears, but her fingers were nimble and precise as she crafted her golems. Despite her intense focus on her work, she had a warm and friendly smile that put people at ease.

Personality

Friendly, open, honest to a fault and a genius with golems. That would describe Dora to a T, from every personal account no one ever had a bad thing to say about her and even more than that she was doggedly determined to prove that she could do whatever she set her mind to. She was capable of so many great things and always saw the good in everyone which is likely what got her killed. The naivete she displayed allowed many to take advantage of her but she never complained and instead focused on her work ever improving her creations.

Background

Dora's life was filled with hardships and woe, though many thought she would be one of the few to escape the clutches of the circumstances of their birth ultimately the world of Arbor takes no prisoners and she was doomed to fall like so many before her.

Early Life

Dora began life the daughter of an unknown, unremarkable family living in what was the Twigs of its time. At some point in her upbringing perhaps at school or maybe in her first job someone noticed the little girl had an incredible talent for machines. Fixing them while crawling through them Factory Bosses rarely let talent go to waste especially when it can net them more profit and pretty soon young Dora found her life changed dramatically as she was apprenticed to a golemancer.

Apprenticeship

From available accounts Dora's apprenticeship did not last long, not because she was kicked out or did something wrong instead her teacher believed that there was nothing left to teach her. In what should have taken decades of learning Dora mastered golemancy in a little over a year. Her teacher referred her to another and that one referred her to another and again and again until eventually they all had to conclude that they had nothing to teach her and recommended her to The Ember Golem Corp as soon as possible lest someone else grab her attention.

The Work Begins

Sometime later after Dora had already been working on Golems for a while many of her colleagues were approached by representatives of the Goldfoot family they had ignored Dora because she was so young in comparison and as she saw each of them come back defeated she wondered what was happening. When the representative finally approached Dora and showed her the problem she understood why so many people had come back looking the way they did. Dora though saw a challenge that she could only rise to and set to work.

All Good Things

The exact length of time from Dora seeing the body designs for the Artifex and her completion of the first prototype vary from story to story some say she had it done in a day others say it took years. Regardless when it was complete and the first Artifex moved that is what sealed her fate. Dora handed over every plan and secret to their construction and activation, when she did so the Goldfoot family sent a group of people to kill her, Doras home in Third Ring burned that night and everyone knows who did it. But with no one to stand up for her the The Green Cloaks did not pursue it and Dora is only remembered for the work she completed, every Artifex in existence bears her signature in a way.

Relationships

Almost no records exist about any potential lovers or even friends perhaps being the genius that she was made it hard to make friends.
