Personal history

Much of the history of Vaste's early years have become legends, forged in myth and only tempered in truth. Historians claim he hailed from the far north, somewhere between the current-day towns of Jaatikko or Tuhermaa. His father was the local chief and his mother a powerful shaman, and he grew up learning both skillsets. By the age of 12, Vaste endured the tribe's coming-of-age test. He ventured into the wilderness, alone, and survived for two weeks. When he came back, he told the tribe he had been visited by the spirit of a young white dragon and showed them a scale as proof. Vaste became a warrior for the tribe, fighting the giants and other wild creatures that preyed on his people. After his father died, Vaste became the chief and put his warrior skills to use by absorbing more and more land.    In a battle with the giants of the north, legend claims the blades of his enemies simply glanced off Vaste as though his skin was made of iron. He gained the nickname "the Ironscaled" and other tribes agreed to come under his protection and leadership. Through the merging of most of the northern and southern tribes, Vaste created a kingdom spreading from Jaatikko to Rippuaa, on the banks of the Tencolor Lake. He established his capital at Torni, then a natural island on the lake, and embarked on a building campaign. He erected the Kingskeep and the docks, and many other imperial buildings. What he did not know was that all the activity had awakened Yiv'Nalm from his hibernation at the bottom of the lake. It attacked the city, besieging it for ten days. Vaste consulted his wife, a shaman of great power, and she told him of a way to banish the creature into deep slumber. In a battle that lasted two days, Vaste and his guard succeeded in enchanting Yiv'Nalm and the kraken sank back into the depths of the lake.   In his old age, Vaste named his grandson his successor, as his son had died in the battle with Yiv'Nalm. Upon his death, Vaste's body was taken to the royal crypt and buried with ceremony. His tomb is still cared for and guarded, as are the graves of all the other Kings of the Marches.
