Baron
This is a title of nobility, that has been appointed by the sovereign. It is a hereditary rank that is awarded for feats of honor in battle. They are aristocrats that are higher than a knight but lower than a count. This title is held directly by the king and he is not beholden to another noble above him. The female version is a baroness.
Their land is called a barony. Barons raise militia for the king, make sure they are trained and equipped for war, etc. They also run the farms and hunting grounds of their lands to put food on the king's table. Some even train horses or raise cattle, sheep, swine, etc.
Barons are also often on the advisory council, upholding the laws of the kingdom in their lands, making sure taxes are paid, and recording the census. Barons had immense power in their own lands, often functioning as mini-kings. They had their own private armies, courts, officials, and even dynasties. They had extensive powers of jurisdiction within their barony and were even able to inflict the death penalty.
They have the right to be addressed as "Lord" or "The Right Honourable", and to sit in the House of Lords, be members of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, and be entitled to wear ceremonial clothing, even a coronet with 4 silver balls on top. They can create knights and other vassals. Barons are often called upon to act as judges in court cases involving breach of faith or treason.
