Jagged Flats

A large salt-flat located within an expansive crater, where a thick surface crust covers a pool of condensed liquid brine. These flats get their name from the steep, pointed shards of salt-crust littering the landscape that were displaced by Basilisks burrowing beneath. The last basilisk was slain here by Mori, the dragon empress, staining the flats red and pink until the decaying form of her victim lay crystallized in salt, fused to the crust.

Geography

Other than the displaced pieces of crust, the land appears completely flat. In the dry season, a dust of white salt coats the surface, with visible cracks in the crust. Most of the time, a shallow pool of water no deeper than a meter covers the flats, creating a mirror-like effect when viewed from afar. Beneath the crust, the brine reaches to unknown depths and is particularly rich in certain minerals.

Fauna & Flora

Not much life can be supported by such a barren environment, yet some creatures have managed to find their niche here. Hardy microorganisms flourish in the surface water, but lie dormant when it dries up. Various cactus-like vegetation line the outer edges of the crater containing the flats, however, even these plants cannot grow close to where the salt concentration is high.
