Eggstring
Eggstring is a clothing material made out of strings of eggs which are protected by the mother squid. She lets them float behind her while she swims and hunts until they are ready to hatch. The royal families of the Syreni Cephalopod hunt these mothers, kill them and use their Eggstrings for female Syreni Cephalopod to wear during rituals and ceremonies.
They are a sign of fertility as the Syreni Cephalopod give birth the exact same way as their Squid (which also belong to the Class of the Cephalopod) ancestors. As long as a female Syreni Cephalopod doesn't have her own net of Eggstring, she needs her husband, father, son or brother to hunt a mother squid down and bring her an Eggstring which she than wraps around her body for the ceremony.
They are one-use-only clothing and get discarded after the ceremony because of their organic nature. Many of the eggs will not survive without their mother because, although they are able to fend for themselves when hatched, until then, they are vulnerable in the open and ready to get eaten by any predator coming by. Some Syreni Cephalopod make the eating of the Eggstring after the ceremony a tradition in itself but the practitoners are most likely to belong to the underclass. They want to make full use of the Eggstring. Most Syreni Cephalopod, though, look down on that custom.
The look of the Eggstring of course changes depending on the species of squid. Some are more valuable than other and some go in and out of style or are seasonal.
Because of the fertility cycle of the squids, ceremonies and rituals are all spaced in such a way that they only happen during a time that mother squids and their Eggstring can actually be harvested.
