DM's Report: Return to Quickmarch, Visions, Dreams, Meetings, and Partings

General Summary

Fresh from their escape from the Black Tower, our heroes decided to rest for the night. During the night Vyth had a vision: first she was wrapped in the embrace of a great serpent. Moving away a man in chains was revealed to her, he was swallowed by a hole which emanated hunger. The hole led her to a book of great knowledge.   I the morning the heroes woke from their rest and found Kepisk had left them, returning to his homeland. He had, however, left the bird statue they had found behind. So they set off to Quickmarch, aware of Vyth's vision, and eager to claim their reward. However first they had debts to pay. This required a stop at Things Found where Helja Hammerk was waiting for them. Helja used a detect magic spell on the items the heroes presented to her, and from the selection she decided to keep the candle She exchanged their gems for coin, keeping a fee to identify the various magical treasures they brought back.   Helja tipped the heroes to someone waiting for Bimpnotten in the Broken Barrel Inn, so they made that their next stop. Upon entering they met another gnome engaged in conversation with Gord. Bimpnottin and the gnome retired to a table for private conversation. As the rest of the heroes gathered round their own table Berrek arrived with Geoffrey Staltman to thank the heroes for their service and present them with a reward. It was noted that Geoffrey seemed displeased by this necessity. Berreck invited the heroes to dinner at his place later that evening.   Following everyone went their separate ways in search of rest and relaxation. Pijarr left the Broken Barrel in search of a smithy, but ran into Berreck and Geoffrey being accosted by a farmer complainig of missing cows. He also learned of the appearance of a sinkhole within the town. He also learned of a sailor being held in the local jail.   When the trio broke up, Pijarr followed Geoffrey to the jail. Upon reaching the building there was a rumbling and a loud scream. Pijarr and Geoffrey ran inside to find something had broken through the jail floor and dragged off a second prisoner in the cell. The sailor, Trent, remained, very eager to find his freedom. Pijarr investigated the hole, noted caverns below, and offered to explore. Geoffrey was impressed by this offer and promised he would reward those who helped sort the matter out. He also pressed Trent into helping as a way to pay for damages he had caused the night before in a drunken stupor.   Pijarr gathered the others, although Bimpnottin declined to join. Instead, his cousin Mortimer would join and Bimpnottin would return to Ujen. Shortly the heroes descended into the hole, finding a network of tunnels. They were immediately attacked by fire beetles, which posed little threat. Exploring further they found the caverns were covered with webbing. Trent decided to burn the webbing, which spread throughout the cavern, quickly creating a dangerous environment of smoke and fire. As the group hurried forward they found themselves blocked by a wide chasm. With a boost of Mortimer's magic, Pijar was able to jump the divide and tie off a rope. With flames still licking at their heels, the group began to cross. The flames, however had spread down the chasm and this caused an exodus of spiders from below up the far side, including three giant ones.   Trent crossed first, followed by Vyth. However during combat Vyth fell from the cavern edge. Mortimer was quick to cast a Feather Fall spell on her and Pijarr threw another rope down, which Vyth was able to grab. As the spiders surrounded him, Pijarr pulled Vyth back up. With spells and arrows from their compatriots on the other edge, Trent first killed one spider then threw another over the edge. Finally Vyth smashed the last.
